ECE 10CL Lab 1 Lab 1: First Order Transients/Charge Pump Required Parts: Quantity Part Name Shop Part Number 1 ALD1106 Quad NMOS FET 1106 1 ALD1107 Quad PMOS FET 1107 4 Electrolytic Capacitor 1μF ECR1 1 Electrolytic Capacitor 10μF ECR10 5 1N4148 Diode 4148 1 100k Resistor QWR100K Objectives: Build a Dickson charge pump. Step 1: Prelab [Reading][LTspice Simulation] 1.1 Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of the Dickson Charge Pump. Explain, in your own words, how the circuit behaves as a charge pump [RP1] . Additional resources/Suggested readings: Charge Pump Wikipedia , Blog . Figure 1 Dickson Charge Pump 1
ECE 10CL Lab 1 1.2 In LTspice, build a circuit in Figure 2. Plot Vout and identify which output corresponds to the circuit with C=0.1μF, 1μF, and 10μF [RP2] . Bonus to think about: You can zoom-in the first few milliseconds to see the step transient. Does this make sense? Figure 2 LTspice schematic diagram of a 4-stage Dickson Charge Pump Step 2: In-Lab [Breadboard] This step will lead you to the complete setup of the circuit in Figure 2. Use Vin = 3V. C = 1μF. 2.1 Build the square pulse signals first. You will only use 1 output from the function generator. This one will be signal CLK . To get signal CLKN , you will need to build a CMOS inverter with CLK as an input. The output from CMOS will be CLKN . You should do a sanity check of the pulse signals before moving forward. Correct results of CLK and CLKN should look like in figure 3. 2
ECE 10CL Lab 1 Figure 3 plot of CLK (yellow) and CLKN (cyan) sanity check. 2.2 Now build the rest of the circuit. Take a picture of your completed circuit [RP3] . Take a snapshot of the oscilloscope screen showing both the Vin and Vout signals [RP4] . 2.3 What is the voltage gain of this charge pump [RP5] ? 2.4 Report voltage drops across each diode, D1 to D5. Does it add up? Does this make sense? Explain [RP6] . 2.5 Compare the performance between the real circuit and the simulated one. What could cause the difference [RP7] ? 2.6 Check-off: Demonstrate the circuit to your Lab TA. Did you check off [RP8] ? 3
