ECE 645 Digital Electronics –
Spring 2023 Homework #5 LC Transmission Lines: (50 pts) 1)
Use PSpice to simulate a 5V step function source with a 25
Ω source impedance that will drive a transmission line with Z0=75 Ohms and TD=50ns. Terminate the end of the transmission line with a 1k resistor. Plot the source, input terminal, and output terminal voltages (5pts) 2)
Using a bounce diagram, calculate the input and terminal voltages of the transmission line from t=0s until t=500ns. (10 pts) 3)
Compare your calculated results to the simulation results you get from part 1. (5 pts) 4)
Use PSpice to simulate a 5V step function source with a 75Ω source impedance that will drive two series transmission lines. The first line has Z0=75 Ohms and TD=50ns, the second line has Z0=200 Ohms and TD=50ns. Terminate the far end of the transmission line with a 1MEG resistor.
Plot the source, input terminal, and output terminal voltages vs time until they appear to settle to a steady state output. (10 pts) 5)
Design a resistor network to match the impedance of the two transmission lines from part 4: a 75 Ohm line tied to a 200 Ohm line. (10 pts) 6)
Modify your simulation from the step 4) above to model the two transmission lines with the resistive matching network you designed. Plot the source, input terminal, and output terminal voltages as you did before and compare to see if you successfully removed the impedance mismatch. How can you tell that you were successful? (10 pts)

A 50 transmission line is to be connected to a 72 load through a 1/4 quarter wave matching
transformer. (a) What must be the characteristic impedance of the transmission line that is
used to form the quarter wave transformer? (b) If the frequency of operation is 7 MHz and the
phase velocity through the quarter wave section is 2c/3, what is the length of the quarter wave
section? You may assume the transmission line forming the quarter wave section is lossless.
