GEO 200 Milestone One Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric
Overview:
This milestone activity is the first of two specific milestones that will build toward your complete final project for the course. For this milestone activity, you will submit this completed worksheet, in which you will address the elements below regarding your current and new global regions. See the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document for detailed information about this scenario. These responses will contribute to the speaker notes transcript that you will create to accompany your final project presentation.
Prompt: For this assignment, complete the following steps:
1.
Download this document.
2.
Review the Milestone One Rubric (below the worksheet).
3.
Complete Parts I through III below, which address the following critical elements:
I.
Provide a
map
of
your current global
region
and describe its location, sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics, and interactions
.
II.
Provide a
map
of
your new
global region
and describe its location, sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics, and interactions
.
III.
Compare the
similarities and differences
between your current and new region based on their physical and sociocultural (human) characteristics.
4.
Once you have completed the worksheet, upload your saved worksheet file along with any additional map image files and submit this milestone assignment.
Note
: Refer to your module resources and the Themes of Geography
resource, as well as additional resources you identify, for information to help you answer the questions below. Remember that you will need to have at least five sources in current APA style for your citations and references list in the final project submission. Note that each question of your worksheet has you track your citations. This is so you will not need to go back and figure out where you grabbed a resource from when you submit your final slides. You will be able to use these worksheets to copy and paste your citation list into your last slide. In some instances, you may have used the same resource more than once, which is why your list may be as small as five resources. Before starting this activity, review Milestone One Worksheet Student Example document within the Student Example Folder. Part I: Current Global Region
1.
Identify Your Current Region:
West Coast of North America
2.
Map of Current Global Region: Provide a map of your current region. In the box below you may provide a link to your map, insert an image, or make note that you are submitting an additional file with this worksheet. Include a citation to give credit to the resource from which you are obtaining your 1
image.
Note:
The box will expand to accommodate your image.

Location of Current Global Region: Discuss where your current region is located, addressing the absolute and relative location of the region. Include citations for your resources using APA style guidelines as needed.
I currently live in the West Coast region of North America with the
absolute location at 62.4114° N, 149.0730° W. The West Coast includes California, Oregon, Washington mainly, and sometimes Alaska and Hawai’i – all states being the western most states in North America (West Coast States, nd)
. The West Coast is made up by the states in this order: Alaska on top with Canada separating, then Washington, followed by Oregon and California with Hawai’i 2,390 miles West of California (WorldAtlas, 2023) in the Pacific Ocean. This region is located in between the Pacific Ocean to the West, with Idaho bordering Washington and Oregon to the East and Nevada and Arizona bordering California to the East. Alaska is located on the far northwest tip of North America bordered by the Arctic Ocean, a section of the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Strait
and Bering Sea, the Gulf of Alaska (klaus kästle - nationsonline.org, n.d.), with Canada to the East. Hawai’i is a group of islands located in the central Pacific Ocean with California to the East.

4.
Characteristics of Current Global Region: Explain what key sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics define this as a region. Include citations for your resources using APA style guidelines as needed.
Since the West coast is so vast, there are many languages spoken but among the top are English, Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog or Filipino (
Languages Spoken | CIDP
, n.d.). The West coast is described as the least religious region of the United States with 29% of the population identifying as very religious, 28% as moderately, and 43% as not religious (Norman, 2023). In California the population density is 246.1 persons per square mile, with Hawaii at 218.6 persons, Washington at 104.9, Oregon at 40.9, and Alaska with the smallest population density being 1.3 persons per square mile (Contributors to Wikimedia projects, 2021). The west coast is a very economically successful region with California being the largest gateway for international trade and domestic commerce with its many ports, highways and railways, the state moves millions of tons of product daily (
Freight & Goods Movement | California Air Resources Board
, n.d.). 4
The West coast is made of 3 main climate zones: Marine West Coast, Mediterranean, and Midlatitude desert. The marine West coast comprises of few extreme temperatures, rarely breaching above 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but with frequent rainfall on more than 250 days annually. Mediterranean climate is a mild temperature zone with low precipitation, producing only 20 inches of rain annually, and hot, dry summers (
What Are the 3 Climate Zones of West Coast U.S? | Socratic
, n.d.). The Midlatitude climate is also known humid temperate climates with low humidity and precipitation except during monsoon seasons in July and August (Nijman et al., 2020).
Natural hazards to the West coast states are coastal and marine geohazards like earthquakes, volcano eruptions, landslides, and tsunamis (
Coastal and Marine
Geohazards of the U.S. West Coast and Alaska | U.S. Geological Survey
, 2022), as well as severe droughts which cause wildfires.
The West coast landscape is very diverse and ever changing due to tectonic activity, mountain building, and land subsidence (
Dynamic Coastlines Along the Western U.S. | U.S. Geological Survey
, 2022). The mountains in the West coast make up the Western Cordilleran (

Interactions of Current Global Region: How have humans and the environment interacted to produce observable landscapes in your current region? Include citations for your resources using APA style guidelines as needed.
The Western most states are all bordered by the Pacific Ocean which guarantees beautiful beaches in every state. The most notable are Alaska which has over 33,000 miles of shoreline (Alaska.org, 2023) and California that has 420 public beaches (“California’s Best Beaches to Visit This Summer,” 2019). The beaches of the West Coast bring visitors from all over the world, as well as the many state parks and large mountain range in this region. Alaska, California, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii have a total of 15 national parks and the Pacific Coast Ranges are a 3,800 mile long mountain range that extends along the Pacific coast from Canada down to central Mexico.
The west coast has a large agriculture industry with due to its varied climates. In California the largest are dairy products/milk earning $10.4 billion, grapes $5.54 billion, cattle $3.63 billion, almonds $3.52 billion, and lettuce $3.25 billion (California Department of Food and Agriculture, n.d.). In Hawaii, macadamias, coffee, papayas, and avocadoes are the most profitable at $49 million, $48.4 million, $3.1 million, and $1.2 million respectively (Stacker, 2022). Oregon has the
most diverse crops in the nation and produce 220 agricultural products with greenhouse and nursery products valuing at $1.19 billion, cattle and calves at $5.9
million, hay at $5.7 million at the highest ranking (
Oregon.gov : State of Oregon
, n.d.). Washington sells an average of $1.95 billions of apples, $1.5 billion of milk, $9.3 millions of potatoes, and $7.9 million of wheat (Washington State Department of Commerce, 2023).

4.
Characteristics of New Global Region: Explain what key sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics define this as a region. Include citations for your resources using APA style guidelines as needed.
Central Europe is one of the most populated regions of Europe, the core countries is home to around 165 million people with 82 million of them being in Germany. Poland has the second largest population of the region at 38.5 million, Czech Republic with 10.5 million, Hungary with 10 million, Austria with 8.8 million, Switzerland with 8.5 million, Slovakia with 5.4 million and Slovenia with 2.1 million (Wikipedia contributors, 2024c).
The Alps in Central Europe span across 750 miles and 5 countries and Zugspitze of the Bavarian Alps in South Germany stands at 10,000 feet making it the highest point in the country. Germany is 137,988 square miles and includes the Black Forest Region, North German plain, and the Rhine River that is 750 miles long and is one of the most important shipping waterways in the world. Switzerland is home to the Alps and the Jura mountains and has 208 mountain peaks over 10,000 feet with the Matterhorn standing at 14.692 feet as well as 1,800 glaciers. Switzerland also has 600 miles of shoreline spanning across 2600 lakes with Lake Geneva being the largest at 224 square miles. Liechtenstein is a small country at only 62 square miles and is one of only 2 double landlocked countries in the world and mostly mountainous. As well as Liechtenstein, Austria is a mostly mountainous country but is also the northeastern most state on the Danube River. Slovenia contains the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, and has 30 miles of coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Hungary is made of 49% suitable farming land while the Danube River flows through its capitol city of Budapest. Slovakia is home to the Tatra mountains and over 2400 caves. Czechia has low hills, plateaus, the Bohemian Forest, and the Vltava River flows through its capitol city Prague. North Germany has is usually slightly breezy from the winds off the Atlantic Ocean and can be overcast for weeks, which spreads as well to Czechia. Hungary and Slovakia have a continental climate with 4 distinct seasons. Slovenia also has a continental climate but is Mediterranean near the sea, and Switzerland has cold, dry winds in the summers and freezing temperatures in the winters,
but in spring, the Foehn winds blow from south and over the alps bringing warmer weather (Miacademy Learning Channel, 2022). Central Europeans are taught from birth Croatian, Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, and Slovenian while the most popolar languages taught are English, German and French with German being the most known with 100 million native speakers (Baltic Media
Translation Services in Northern Europe, 2021). Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism are most prevalent after years of communist regimes and promoted atheism (Mitchell, 2022b). Part III: Comparison of Similarities and Differences
1.
Similarities: Based on the physical and sociocultural (human) characteristics you have described, what are the major similarities between your current 10
and new region?
Both the West Coast and Central Europe have stunning landscapes from all the different beaches to the large mountain ranges making them perfect locations for tourism and outdoor activities. Another similarity is the Christian religion being the most practiced religion. 2.
Differences: Based on the physical and sociocultural (human) characteristics you have described, what are the major differences between your current
and new region?
There is a large difference in multicultural between these two regions. The West Coast has many different races of people including white, Latin, black, native American or indigenous, Asian, native Hawaiian or pacific islander and mixed (
The Demographic Statistical Atlas of the United States - Statistical Atlas
, n.d.) with white being the largest in Central Europe.
