Any suspicion of copying or plagiarism in this work will result in an investigation of Academic Misconduct and may result in a “0” on the work, Overview When installing a WLAN for an organization, areas of dead space might not be tolerated. Site survey is a process of planning a WLAN to meet design goals. Effectiveness of a WLAN often linked to thoroughness of the site survey. Site surveys help achieve best possible performance from WLAN, certify that installation will operate as promised, and determine best location for APs. Manual site survey requires carrying around a laptop with dedicated network software. The purpose of this Lab is to carry out a site survey to validate performance in the real world. Students will learn how to build and prepare a professional site survey reports, analyse the recorded data, and study the WiFi characteristics of the tested networks. Learning Objective Upon completion of this lab, students will be able to: Understand how Site survey can be used for optimising and troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks. Demonstrate the use of network software tools to perform WiFi site survey Understand the relationship between signal strength, channel numbers and interference. Carryout a Field test recording and analyzing the Signal strength, Channels in use, and other parameters to better comprehend the impact of terrain, building infrastructure and distance on handoff and coverage. Map the Wi-Fi coverage at the location – in this Centennial Progress Campus. Equipment required 1 Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 or 10 One Wi-Spy DBx USB-connected spectrum analysis hardware adapter Wi Spy Chanalyzer visualization software Procedure Task 1: Field Tests 1. Each member of the team will need to make at least 4 runs for the Field tests. All tests should be done outside the lab A3-63. Do a campus wide walk and select 4 blocks at Centennial College Progress campus for the field tests. 2. Sign out one Lenovo laptop and one Chanalyzer tool box. Make sure to return the laptop and the Chanalyzer box before the end of your lab time.
Lab 10: Wi-Fi Site Survey 3. Take measurment at a minimium of 3 locations per block (or 12 locations campus wide). Select different floors for each test. 4. For each test, use the report builder of Channalyzer to build a total of 12 report files in PDF format. Save all the 12 reports and the lab report (this document) in one folder. Zip the folder and submit your work by the lab due date. 5. To prepare a PDF file using Chanalyzer Report Builder: Run the Channelyzer at the test location, wait for at least 4 minuites to allow the Chanalyzer logs data from multiple sources. Click Report Builder from the top menu of Chanalyzer and the select Add All Blocks. In the Report Builder window, Click on the Pencil at the right upper corner. Type in the Title field “WiFi Site Survey-Centennial College-Progress campus”. In the field Prepared By, type your name and partner names. In the Report Builder window, Click on the Setting icon shown on the right upper corner. Select Export, and save the PDF report as XXYYZZ_BF. Where, XXYYZZ are first letters of first and last names of group partners, BF refers to the location, example A2 for block A floor 2. Task 2: Post-Lab Assignment: Anlyzing CCwSecure Network Performance [7 mark] 1. Using the 12 site servy reports, analyze the data recorded for CCwSecure network and complte the following tables Block 1: Block A Floor # (example, A1, A2, A3, etc) Number of APs (BSSID Count) Maximum Data Rate (Mbps) Security Channel with max. number of APs Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with best Average SNR Average SNR=Average−Noise Floor A1 74 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 1 46.9% 6 5 (39.0dB) A2 80 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 6 42.9% 6 4 (42.0dB) A3 43 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 6 41.6% 6 2 (40.5dB) If you are to install new AP, what channel you will assign to this AP. Use the data recorded in the above table to Justify your answer.

Lab 10: Wi-Fi Site Survey Given the information, Channel 6 is a common choice , as it has the best average SNR in all three floors. Additionally, it is the channel with the maximum number of APs in Floors A1 and A2. 2. Repeat assignment step 1 for the next block [6 mark] Block 2: Block B Floor # Number of APs (BSSID Count) Maximum Data Rate (Mbps) Security Channel with max. number of APs Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with best Average SNR Average SNR=Average−Noise Floor B1 66 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 1 59.0% 6 5 (31dB) B2 119 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 1 52.7% 1 11 (38dB) B3 80 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 6 49.9% 6 7 (43.5dB) From the recorded data in the above table, if you are to install new AP. What channel the AP to be confiured. Justify your answer B1 Floor: Channel 6 B2 Floor: Channel 11 B3 Floor: Channel 7
Lab 10: Wi-Fi Site Survey 3. Repeat assignment step 1 for the next block [6 mark] Block 3: Block C Floor # Number of APs (BSSID Count) Maximum Data Rate (Mbps) Security Channel with max. number of APs Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with Maximum Bandwidth Utilization Channel with best Average SNR Average SNR=Average−Noise Floor C1 114 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 6 57.1% 6 3 (33.0dB) C2 66 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 1 56.9% 2 7 (35dB) C3 67 1733.3 WPA2- Enterprise 6 49.9% 1 8 (42dB) From the recorded data in the above table, if you are to install new AP. What channel the AP to be confiured. Justify your answer C1 Floor: Channel 6 C2 Floor: Channel 7 C3 Floor: Channel 8
