Module 4 – Drone
Case Study
Name: Agricultural Field Location: Orwell, PEI
Areas of concern: This field had erosion issues in the past and the farmer wanted to fix them by installing soil conservation structures. This drone survey imagery will assess how these soil conservation structures have performed after six years.
Stats (area, land use, human resources, budget, photos, maps, etc.):
Area: approximately 20 hectares
Land use: farmland
In this case study, a drone has been identified as the most appropriate technology for collecting the relevant data.
Follow these steps to complete the case study:
1.
Review the information provided. 2.
Answer the questions and complete the project requirements table in this document. 3.
Once you have completed the case study independently, watch the video (in SAM) to self-check your responses. Be sure to make note of the correct answers, as these will help you when you complete your final project.
4.
Watch the case study demonstration video (in SAM), which walks through the steps using drone technology. This video demonstration
will help inform your data-based decisions for your final project.
5.
Use the Learner Workbook to take note of your learning and reflections. Be sure to reference these notes when you complete your final project.
Module 4 – Drone
Case Study
Resolution & Accuracy – Do you need high resolution imagery? Do you require accurately georeferenced data?
Coverage Area –
How large is the area you are looking to cover? Budget & Financial – What financial constraints are in place?
Timing of Data –
Do you require up to date information or is previously collected data suitable?
Data Sources & Storage – Where will you source the data? Do you need to collect it yourself? Outputs Required – What outputs are required to achieve your goals?
(e.g
.,
Orthomosaic, digital surface model, slope map, measurement, etc.)
Analysis Software – What software will be required to work with your data? Additional Considerations-
Is
there anything else you will need to consider? (e.g.
,
environment, weather, IT, human resources, etc.)
Project Requirements
Case study questions:
1.
Why was a drone selected for this project? 2.
How and where would you source or collect the required data?
3.
How would you use appropriate software to generate your required outputs from the data you source?
4.
What will the outputs tell you about the effectiveness of soil conservation efforts against erosion in this field?

A selected structural douglas fir-Larch 4*16 beam on a 20ft span support a hoist located at the center of the span. determine the maximum allowable load on the hoist (including its weight) based on the bending. Assume normal load duration. The beam is supported on a 2*4 top plate. Lateral support is provided onl at the ends of the member and the ends are cosidered pinned. In addition, this time the beam used is known to be located in the unventilated rafter space of a commercial barn in Louisiana. As such, the beam will routinely experience both elevated temperatures and humidity. Assume that the temperature up in the rafters is often between 1100F and 1200F. In addition, assume that the beam often has a moisture content around 21%. You can keep all the original assumptions as the example in class. Take the time dependent variable for LRFD (λ) as 1.0. Also assume that bending governs the design and not shear or deflection. Draw a quick sketch of the beam, supports and loading as…
