Zhanming Lin Benjamin S. Weil Active Learning Assignment: How much electricity does my entertainment system use? Based on my research, a desktop gaming console uses around 90 watts when actively used for gaming and 1-2 watts during standby mode. However, the energy consumption can vary significantly depending on the type of game being played. For instance, games like Overwatch 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have been reported to have high CPU usage, which could lead to higher energy consumption. When the entertainment system is not in use, it still consumes electricity. This is known as “standby” or “idle” power. The average smart TV, for example, uses around 14 watts in standby mode. This idle load can add up over time, contributing to a significant portion of a household’s energy use. Streaming a movie on a desktop can consume around 0.077 kWh of electricity per hour. This means that if you watch a two-hour film, it would consume approximately 0.154 kWh of electricity. After a week of monitoring, I found that I could reduce the energy consumption significantly by simply turning off the console when not in use. This simple change, along with being mindful of the types of games I played, helped me reduce my energy usage by approximately 20%. In conclusion, while entertainment systems consume a considerable amount of energy, especially when playing high-graphic games, there are ways to mitigate this. By being mindful of our usage, turning off systems when not in use, and choosing games that require less energy, we can significantly reduce the energy consumption of our entertainment systems. This helps us save on our electricity bills and contributes to energy conservation efforts.
