Module 1 Short Responses – Question 1 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? The influx of unskilled Irish immigrants into New York City in the 1840s and early 1850s drives down wages for other workers at the low end of the salary ladder. I think that the historical lens of economy is being applied. This is because the scenario is stating as population goes up, the economy doesn't have enough money and wages will decrease. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 2 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? In 1908 Aram Pothier, an immigrant from Quebec, is elected governor of Rhode Island with strong support from the Québécois community. I think that the historical lens being applied is the political lens as well as the social lens. This is because electing a state governor is a political decision but the fact that the governor was an immigrant supported by other immigrants represents social change. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 3 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans come to dominate the hierarchy of the American Catholic Church in the late 19th century. I think the historical lens being applied in this scenario is the religious lens. This is because this scenario shows a change in the structure of the Catholic religion. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 4 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? Immigration to the United States comes to be seen as a "rite of passage" for young Québécois women in the early 20th century. I think the historical lens applied in this scenario is the social lens. This is because
immigration is being presented as a 'fad' to young women, thus causing more women to immigrate. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 5 If you had to write a paper on the Lincoln assassination, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic. How did the assassination of Abraham Lincoln effectively delay the fight for civil rights of African Americans from a political perspective? How did the assassination of Abraham Lincoln effect the political and social aspect of keeping important figures of history safe and under guard? Did the assassination of Abraham Lincoln change the social views of his acts as President? How so? Module 1 Short Responses – Question 6 If you had to write a paper on Title IX, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic. Has Title IX decreased the number of men's sports teams by mandating an increase in women's athletics? From an economical perspective, has Title IX created a positive impact to the economy of both men's and women's athletics? Did Title IX have any effects on the Equal Rights Movement and did it cause any adverse reactions? Module 1 Short Responses – Question 7 Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through the lens of political history. What political changes were put into place pertaining to education due to the Irish immigration boom?
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 8 Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through the lens of economic history. How did the mass immigration of the Irish effect the economics of wages for all low wage workers in manufacturing jobs in large cities?
