A. Research topic: You will be assessing a theory that high levels of personal and economic freedom and education cause superior economic performance as measured by GDP per capita. If this were a quantitative study, what would you identify as the Independent and Dependent variables? B. Most likely case: Remember that a most likely case is one in which theory predicts an outcome is most likely to occur because all of the causal factors indicate that we should observe the theorized outcome. Identify a most likely case from the countries listed in table 7-2. Explain why you chose this most likely case. What would your conclusion be if the theory failed to explain the most likely case? C. Least likely case: Remember that a least likely case is one where the outcome is least likely to occur because all of the causal factors except the factor of most interest predict that we will not observe the theorized outcome. Identify a least likely case from the countries listed in table 7-2. Explain why you chose this least likely case. What would your conclusion be if the theory explained the least likely case?
D. Deviant case: Remember that a deviant case is one that exhibits all of the factors thought to lead to a particular outcome but in which the outcome does not occur. Identify a deviant case from the countries listed in table 7-2. Explain why you chose this deviant case. How might studying this deviant case contribute to the revision and refinement of the theory? EXERCISE 3. In this exercise you will contemplate case selection in a comparative study research design. Imagine that you are interested in studying the role nongovernmental organizations play in reducing conflict during civil war. You might begin by limiting your scope to intrastate conflict in the 1990s. You can find a list of such conflicts in table 7-3. Unfortunately for humankind, it is a very long list. As you have limited resources (time during a busy semester being the most pressing), you will use a comparative study research design and limit your exploration through case selection. You have decided that, based on your schedule, you will only have time to compare three cases. Which three conflicts would you choose from the list? 1. 2. 3. Why did you choose these three cases? Did you choose cases that were similar or different in some way? Were you concerned about a particular region of the globe? What about the length of the conflicts or the number of casualties? Please explain your rationale for case selection in detail.

YOUR STUDY Your research topic: In the space below, design an ideographic case study. Suggest a case or cases that you would use to investigate your research topic and explain the objective of the study as it relates to the research topic. See the plausibility probe answer below as an example or model answer. Plausibility probe A. Case or cases: B. Objectives of design: This design will focus on ______________ in which ____________. The objective of this design is to develop and sharpen a theory of _____________. As part of the theory-building process, I will look to conceptualize and operationalize key terms and consider if the _________________ is in fact a suitable test case to learn about ________________. This plausibility probe will be used to make sure that this case is worthwhile before investing resources in a full-scale research project. C. What is a hypothesis you that you might test? What case would you choose to do this? How is this case different? D. What is a new hypothesis that might be generated from this case study?
