Topic 5 DQ 1 (Obj. 5.4) Assessment Description Identify one anti-poverty policy and associated program and discuss advantages and limitations of the approach. What opportunities are there to improve the policy and associated program? This discussion question is informed by the following EPAS Standard: 5: Engage in Policy Practice The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a US anti-poverty policy that provides tax credits to low- to moderate-income individuals and families. It offers additional income for low-wage workers, encourages employment, reduces income inequality, and supports families with children. However, it has limitations, including limited benefits for childless individuals, complex rules and administrative obligations, not addressing structural poverty, and the potential for fraud due to the program's intricacy. It is short-term assistance and not a solution to structural poverty. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can be improved by expanding coverage for childless workers, making simpler eligibility conditions, increasing awareness, and adjusting credit amounts to keep up with the costs of living and inflation rates. These improvements could help address poverty among single individuals and ensure the credit makes an impact and is relevant over time. Jones, M. R., & Ziliak, J. P. (2022).
