Reading Review: Blood and Plasma Donors During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Arguments Against Financial Stimulation 1. Date submitted:  Saturday, Sept 16th, 2023 3. Article/reading reviewed (full reference): (LR)  Pricop, L (2021) Blood and plasma donors during the COVID-19 pandemic: Arguments against financial stimulation History and Philosophy of Life Sciences, 43(1) http://ezproxy.library.yorku.ca/login?url=https://resolver.scholarsportal.info/resolve/ 03919714/v43i0001/nfp_bapddtcpaafs.xml 4. High level Summary of Purpose of Article Hospitals and medical institutions need blood and plasma donations regularly but are often in short supply. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, this problem became more of an issue as more donations were needed and donations numbers dropped. The article discusses why encouraging people to donate blood and plasma with a financial incentive is not a viable and sustainable option. 5. Key Takeaways The key takeaways from the article are that blood and plasma donations are crucial but countries are not receiving enough donations . Some countries have turned to offering a financial incentive which is not sustainable in the long run because it will create a market for blood based on supply and demand . This will lead to a black market when demand is high and will waste the donations when supply is high because of the storage requirements for blood. The best way to go about procuring more donations would be by appealing to people through rational altruism . 6. Linkage to Course Themes? This article touches on the themes of the private sector compared to the public sector. If people are getting paid for blood donations, it’s essentially privatizing that sector. It also touches on how the macroeconomic factors affect donations. During the Pandemic, fewer people were donating even though there was more need for blood and plasma due to government mandates to not leave your house and the public being scared of contamination. These issues within the non- profit sector need to be addressed through a change in the donation process. 7. Opinion of Article I believe this articles brings a lot of relevant points to light regarding the ongoing crisis of the short supply of blood. Having gone on exchange in a country where donations are paid, I saw many of my friends donate for that reason. Back in Canada, I don’t know as many people that donate. While offering a financial incentive definitely brings in more donors I can see how detrimental it could be for the medical system in the long run if there aren’t enough funds to procure an adequate supply. Educating communities on the benefit of donations is crucial but there is a lot of uncertainty with a donation-based system as you cannot predict numbers. Not all people are altruistically motivated and pouring resources into this system may not be an effective means to a solution. I think a solution that incorporates both financial and benevolent aspects would be the most sustainable solution.
