1. Have you heard of or purchased from Temu before? If so, how did Temu first draw your attention? If not, what about your purchasing habits/consumer profile do you think prevented your attention? 2. Explain Temu: what it is, how it rose to prominence, and what competitive advantages it has over other companies like Amazon. 3. Discuss two ethically gray areas of Temu's business. Do these factors differ from ethically gray areas of its competitors? Why or why not and how? 4. Do you think Temu will be successful in the long run? Why or why not? Use concepts from Chapter 4 to support your answer. The Problem with TEMU | Fast Decor” on YouTube This was the first I had heard of Temu. I already use Amazon, an e-commerce site like Temu, so I never saw value in using Temu. When I use e-commerce sites, I look for affordable products and timely services. My aunt has an Amazon Prime account that she lets me use. Amazon Prime is subscription-based but gives customers benefits like discounts, free shipping, and fast delivery, two things I value. Amazon is also a trusted e- commerce site. It has been reliable for me. According to Lewis (2023), Temu is an e-commerce platform similar to Amazon, owned by a Chinese company but headquartered in Boston. Temu currently sees success because of its competitive advantages. It has products for lower-than-average prices, $7 for a couch cushion cover, and free shipping (Lewis, 2023). Compared to having an Amazon Prime account, customers can buy cheaper products and have free shipping at Temu without paying through a subscription. It saves them money. Even though Temu values saving its customers money, Temu has some unethical business practices. According to Lewis (2023), Temu was accused by the China Labor Watch of requiring its workers to work overtime. Workers were also exposed to unsafe work environments; there were several worker deaths in 2021 (Lewis, 2023). Amazon workers are also put in unsafe working environments and are working overtime. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (2023), six Amazon facilities “exposed warehouse workers to a high risk of low back injuries…”. Workers carry heavy items and awkwardly twist themselves to lift the items. Their assigned tasks require long hours (U.S. Department of Labor, 2023). Temu and Amazon both put their workers in unsafe work environments. Temu will be successful in the long run despite its questionable business ethics. It has good conscious marketing with its customers from its cheap pricing and free shipping. Customers will continue purchasing products from Temu. Because of this, Temu builds customer awareness. Sadly, even from its weak conscious marketing with its employees, for putting them in unsafe working environments. Their employees can protest and quit
working for them. Even then, Temu can always hire other employees. As long as there is still demand for Temu’s products and jobs, Temu will continue to thrive in the long run. References: Lewis, N.
