The Internet Of Things (Case Study #3) Mackinon Fahselt, Ramandeep Singh, Shariar Khan, Marouf Shurrab Would you categorize your case study as IOT or IIOT, and why? I would believe that this case study would be categorized as IIOT because the case study relies on machines and productivity. Main reason being is because the case study talks about wanting to speed up mining at a lower cost. Near the end of the case study, the illustrator quotes “We want to be able to mine at lower cost, we're always competing on that," said Brent Bergeron, Goldcorp's executive vice-president of corporate affairs and sustainability. "[But] doing it in a way where our workers feel much safer and want to continue working for mining companies because they feel like we're investing in safer technologies.” They also state that these “dumb machines” can now “make decisions on its own.” This proves how people must rely on machines and productivity, which would be considered as IIOT. Summarize the influence IOT / IIOT had? How would the situation have been different without this technology? IOT / IIOT has a huge influence on the world today. Almost everything we use today is either IOT or IIOT technology from your smart phone, to your car. It also has a huge influence on industries such as mining, farming and forestry. Without IOT/IIOT we would probably be fine although it is a nice thing to have when it works, it’s also a pain fighting with technology that has a glitch or is broken. I know from experience while farming for my dad that when these systems malfunction it can be very costly/dangerous. For instance, once I was running the grain cart and I had the autosteer set and rolled up next to the combine to unload doing around 9mph. Everything was going good until the gps glitched and turned the wheel toward the combine. I noticed quickly and counter steered the opposite way and missed the header with my tire by about 3 inches. This has happened to me multiple times which makes it hard for me to trust the technology. Do you agree with IOT / IIOT being used in this fashion? What are the possible consequences? Yes, I do agree, because using IIOT in industries such as mining, and forestry has resulted in improved operations. The operations are now more efficient and safer for the workers involved. IIOT used in this fashion also reduces the environmental impacts of those industries and reduces costs. What predictions do you have for the future of IOT/IIOT regarding your field of study? In future, there would be the extensive use of IIOT in industries such as forestry and mining in their daily working. It will reduce the chances of error, leading to improved efficiency. Moreover, it will reduce cost of operation leading to higher profits. Most importantly it will result in safer working environment.
