What factors are present in the economic, social, and legal environment today, which might lead to a revival of unionization of workers in the private sector in the U.S. over the next one to two decades? On the flip side, what factors might lead to the demise of unions in the public sector in the U.S. over the same approximate period? Unions economically appear to deteriorate during difficult periods, but peak during times of prosperity (Kearney, 2009). Labor leaders are emphasizing more on the role of the global economy in shaping the strategies and alliances of unions. This may lead to new tactics, such as global campaigning targeting specific companies, and could strengthen the role of global labor bodies. The workers that unions may target for membership is likely to adjust to the workforce ongoing changes. The changing workers demographics in the fastest growing areas of the economy may drive union recruitment efforts, such as the Latino population, which is the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States (Schramm, 2005). Service sector union have made recruiting women and immigrants a central part of their organizing and recruitment strategies. To achieve this goal, it is important for unions to determine the type of issues that likely to galvanize individuals from specific demographics in joining a union. For example, finding and keeping a job with basic benefits in the economy today. Also, heath benefits were the most important factor in workers job satisfaction and women’s ability to balance work and life (Schramm, 2005). In the United States, unions will remain powerful political and economic forces during the next decade (Kearney, 2009). Kearney, Richard C. (2009). Labor relations in the public sector. (4 th ed).
