CS 305 Module 5 Assignment Two Chuke Rupert CS-305 03 December 2023 Certificate Authorities are providers of digital certificates verifying the authenticity of a host server to which a client wishes to connect over a network. It is important to verify the host authenticity/identity when communicating sensitive data such as passwords, personal information, or financial information (e.g., credit card numbers). For this reason, domains such as e-commerce stores, hospitals, and others who require use of such data depend on valid certificates to prevent attackers from impersonating their site to steal client information. CAs serve as a 3 rd , 4 th , and even beyond disinterested party whose sole job is to verify certificates in a certificate chain in order to ensure the client that the host they are communicating with is who they believe them to be. This is exactly the advantage of a CA: their neutrality and identity as a witness of sorts. Certificate authorities help to ensure that a host isn’t an imposter generating a self-signed certificate to gain access to sensitive information. Image 1: Certificate Generation 1
