ASSIGNMENT 6 1 Assignment # 6 American Military University Professor: Dr Yongge Wang ISSC 266 Cryptography concepts
ASSIGNMENT 6 2 Assignment 6 A virtual private network (VPN) creates an encrypted, private connection between a user's device and a remote server, making it possible to securely send sensitive information across a public network (Empey & Latto, 2020). Although several VPN encryption protocols are available, we will focus on L2TP/IPsec and TLS/SSL. By encrypting IP packets sent between an external network's host and an IPsec gateway on the perimeter of a private network, L2TP/IPsec enables highly secure remote access on an enterprise level (Phifer & Burke, 2019). A pre-shared secret key must be present on both the client and the server for two-way authentication and for the connection to encrypt and transfer traffic to each other (Bischoff, 2022). Rather than the VPN itself providing security, it does it by relying on the target network. (Phifer & Burke, 2019) Encrypting data in transit between remote clients and an SSL/TLS gateway, the TLS/SSL protocol enables a degree of security suitable for corporate networks (Phifer & Burke, 2019). The encryption keys are exchanged securely through a handshake using public key cryptography. When installed with more granular access restrictions at the gateway, SSL/TLS VPNs offer an extra layer of security by filtering and making judgments regarding user or group access to specific ports (Phifer & Burke, 2019).
