What is the fundamental difference between a Layer 2 switch and a Layer 3 router? Layers 2 and 3 are models that describe and explain network communications. Their big difference is the routing function. Layer 2 is the data link layer that works with only MAC (media access control) addresses and does not bother about IP address or any higher layers. As for layer 3 it performs all the functions that layer 2 does plus it does static and dynamic routing. Layer 3 has an elevated in security and power as demanded. * Performance of layer 2 and 3 Layer 2 switch can only switch packets from one port to another. Routing impossible in layer 2, meaning that devices can only communicate within the same network. Whereas in layer 3 devices can communicate internal outside the networks. * MAC and IP address in layers 2 and 3 Layer 2 uses MAC addresses to move data packets from source to destination port. As for layer 3 uses IP addresses sending different subnets together using special routing protocols. * Speed of layers 2 and 3 Layer 2 is faster compared to layer 3 because layer 3 takes its time to search data packets before sending them to their destination.
