Report
Geanni Byrd COU-610 Dr. Laura 1-1 Journal: Identifying Empirical Evidence
In this week’s assignment, I utilized the PsycINFO database within the Shapiro Library for preliminary research employing Boolean searching. Boolean searching, a concept I recently discovered, involves using operators like "and," "or," and "not" to refine search results. By combining terms like "psychotherapy counseling" and "adolescent," I aimed to explore the benefits of psychotherapy for depressed adolescents in a school setting, considering the challenges faced by individuals in low-income urban districts in accessing mental health services. Initially, my search focused on "psychotherapy counseling," following which I added "and adolescent" and further refined it with "and school-based." This approach yielded relevant articles such as "School-related Outcomes," "School-based Counseling," and "Adolescent Girls in High School." Subsequently, I explored "psychotherapy and depressed adolescents" without the school-based parameter, uncovering a wealth of resources on psychotherapy for depressed youth, aligning closely with my professional interests. I also made sure to make the selections of “peer-reviewed” and I made sure that any articles shown to me were produced within the last ten years. Notably, much of the research I found was within the past six years, indicating recent developments in the field. Throughout this process, I encountered challenges in navigating Boolean searches effectively to target my research more precisely. While the search results were informative, I remain curious about further refining my search strategies for more focused outcomes and addressing unanswered questions about conducting research with greater precision.
