2 Medical Office Assistant Ethics In the field of office assistant, it is important to follow the code of ethics to ensure that you are properly assisting patients and remaining professional. The code of ethics that a medical assistant must adhere to is as follows. A. “Render service with full respect for the dignity of humanity.” B. “Respect confidential information obtained through employment unless legally authorized or required by responsible performance of duty to divulge such information.” C. “Uphold the honor and high principles of the profession and accept its disciplines.” D. “Seek to continually improve the knowledge and skills of medical assistants for the benefit of patients and professional colleagues.” E. “Participate in additional service activities aimed toward improving the health and well- being of the community” (AAMA, n.d). This list is only a map to follow to ensure patients are treated with the utmost respect. Ethics in the Medical Office One of the main points in the ethical list that an office assistant must follow is “to render service with full respect”. This means that the patient must be always respected during their time at the office. When a patient comes into the office, they will not want to be open and responsive if they feel they are not being respected. To make a patient feel respected one must speak with honesty and allow the patient to speak without judging their feelings, thoughts, or opinions. To give respect is to earn respect, meaning patients who feel respected give respect to those asking the questions. When a patient is in the office and information is needed from them without respect the patient may not give honest information causing unnecessary limits to be placed on
3 the flow of information. When information is important (such as in an optometrist's office), it is imperative it is correct so that the doctor can provide the proper care. This is all established with respect. Another main point that needs to be followed is to “…keep information confidential…” The value of confidentiality really depends on the individual person or group with whom you are speaking (National Library of Medicine, 2005). Breaching confidentiality can also create limits to be placed on necessary information. This can lead to several issues, some of these issues can include, incorrect care instruction, the wrong prescription, or even unnecessary surgeries. As a medical assistant in an ophthalmology office, it is imperative that when I am speaking with a patient in the workup room the door is closed, this can ensure that the information given to me is not shared with others in the waiting area. A third aspect of medical assistant ethics that seems especially important is to continually seek knowledge and skill improvement. It is important for a medical assistant to understand the ever-changing concepts and information in the medical field. When working in a medical office one must always have the most up-to-date knowledge on what is happening to better serve the patients in the office. Helping a patient with medical questions will be made easier if the skills are top tier. Improvement in skill and knowledge can also help colleagues if their skill level is lacking. The one with more skill/knowledge can assist them to keep them at a higher professional level and point them in the right direction of proper education. Following the code of ethics will keep the office running ethically and professionally. Keeping the code of ethics in the office will allow patients to be comfortable when communicating, which will make them want to return ensuring they are being properly cared for.
