Introduction to GIS Assignment #2 1 Name: ___ QUESTION & ANSWER SHEET Diffusion of Star Banks (100 points) 1. In this lab procedure, what type of data can be used to calculate the rate of population growth along time in census tracts? (5 pts) The data that can be used to calculate the rate of population growth is the deposits of each branch of bank. 2. When finding the Star Banks, should we use the Boolean “or” (the logic is "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA' OR "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA KY' OR "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA-SE INDIANA' ) or “ and ” ( the logic is "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA' AND "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA KY' AND "NAME" = 'STAR BK NA-SE INDIANA' )? Which one should we use (‘or’ or ‘and’)? Please briefly explain. (5 pts) When finding the star banks the Boolean “or” should be used because either of these options could suffice and not necessarily all at once for this situation. 3. What are the effects of quantile, equal interval and natural breaks as methods for classifying attributes? Give examples and describe results. (24 pts) Quantile : This method will create classes with the same number of features. The average would be 15. The darkest color in the map has the largest range in “quantile” since most of the data is near the lower growth values. Equal Interval: This creates classes with the same range. Each class in this case has about 130 differences in growth. The mean is similar to the quantile data and still predominantly in the lowest class. Natural Breaks: This makes classes based on the grouping that is most natural as it says in the name. This is more similar to quantile than Equal interval but it is more spread out. It is some what in between the two previous categories for organization.

Which classification method may distort this trend? Why? (10 pts) I think the classification system of quantiles would best represent the trend of population growth in this area. I think the equal area would display it inadequately and the data would be skewed towards the higher class. 5. Describe the spatial distribution of Star Bank. (5 pt) The distribution was good in the sense that it was well distributed throughout Cincinnati. However, there were some areas with higher counts which is to be expected. 6. Describe the spatial patterns in the classification of the branches by “deposits ‘98” [DPSTS_CY]. Is the spatial pattern for the branches with small deposits essentially the same as the spatial pattern for those with large deposits? (10 pts) There are larger deposits found in Sharonville and downtown Cincinnati and across the river in Northern Kentucky. There are a few locations with bigger deposits more north, but they are spread out and less common. This makes sense because large businesses are typically what makes a city a city, and they would resort to using local banks. 7. Is the branch number related to year established or year acquired or both? Please explain. (5 pt.) The branch number is based on year established not the year acquired. 8. Does the spatial distribution of branch acquisitions suggest anything about the way this bank expanded? Explain it in a spatial way (6 pts.) The spatial distribution shows that the bank locations spread from the city outward 9. a) Create a map showing year established and a map showing year acquired (with tracts boundary). b) Justify your selection of symbols. c) What can you learn and generalize from the comparison of these two maps? (30 pts) a) Done. b) I chose to represent the bank locations in the first map as stars because it is star bank and I thought this was fitting, and I chose all the maps to be this color range because the green-blue scale is inviting to me. I decided to include a screenshot of the growth map only because it seemed important.

Introduction to GIS Assignment #2 3 c) It looks like both maps have correlations with bank locations, and it is interesting to see the dates the locations were acquired. The banks are very spread out and I think that is important to allow many people acces to the banks, and it is a sign of a successful bank that is well established.
