Intelligence Community Brianna Marshall AJS 555 University of Phoenix Dr. Frank Mineo
Intelligence Community The Intelligence Community (IC) is important for keeping the United States safe. Their key mission is to collect, analyze, and deliver foreign intelligence and counterintelligence information to Americas leaders so they can make sound decisions to protect our country ( Mission, n.d.). The Intelligence community has grown tremendously throughout the years and continues to do so for our protection. Intelligence Community After 9/11 Before the September 11,2001 tragedy the country has seen many natural disasters from landslides to hurricanes and has suffered through tragic bombings like the 1992 World Trade Center and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings (Evolution of the Intelligence Community). These disasters help start the introduction of Intelligence Community but unfortunately the tragedy of 9/11 helped strengthen it. The flaws of the Intelligence Community were exposed after 9/11 which caused for new developments. The creation of Homeland Security was born, and it created a greater emphasis on the need for united actions and efforts across previously divided elements of government and society (Evolution of the Intelligence Community ) . Our president at the time, George W. Bush signed four executive orders in August of 2004 that strengthened and reformed the entire intelligence community (History, n.d). A year later in August 2005, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) began its operations. ODNI was created to lead and support IC integration, delivering insights, driving capabilities, and investing in the future ( History, n.d.). The implementation of new reforms and policies help strengthen and grow the intelligence community and other flaws that appeared after 9/11.
The 18 Components of the Intelligence Community The Intelligence Community is formed of 18 different bodies with different missions on protecting the country. The 18 organizations and their key missions are: 1. The Coast Guard unique access, emphasis, and expertise in the maritime domain can collect and report intelligence that not only supports Coast Guard missions, but also supports national objectives ( Members of the IC, n.d.). 5. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)- The DIA is a combat support agency, and a major producer and manager of foreign military intelligence. Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)- The office of the Director of National Intelligence mission is to lead intelligence integration and forge an intelligence community that delivers the most insightful intelligence possible ( ODNI Factsheet, n.d.). Intelligence Community Working Together
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence website states that all components of the U.S Intelligence Community work both independently and collaboratively to gather and analyze the intelligence necessary to conduct foreign relations and national security activities ( para. 2). The IC goal is to collaboratively provide timely, insightful, objective, and relevant intelligence to inform decisions on national security issues and events ( What We Do, n.d.). Who to Notify The senior executive has received a letter making threats towards him. The subject threatened to kill the executive during product deployment conference next month. It is significant we contact the necessary people to handle this situation before it occurs. In this case it is a priority to notify the Federal Bureau of investigation and the Department of Homeland Security. The FBI supports federal, state, county, municipal as well as international partners ( Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). They have many roles in protecting the United States including locating and apprehending fugitives for violations of specific federal laws ( Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). The National Homeland Security key focus is securing the nation from the many threats that we face and preventing future attacks ( Mission, 2023). Conclusion The safety and protection of our country have always been vital to the ones who help run it. As a country, we have had to learn many lessons and face many tragic events which have caused many fatalities. It has left scars on the streets as well as scars on people heart but gave the country the strength to try and fix things so events like 9/11 would not happen again. The country continues to advance for the better of this country and the safety of its citizens.
