Cowan-Phillips 1 Issue Selection and Preliminary Argument Statement Christie Cowan-Phillips Eastern Gateway Community College Professor Howard September 22, 2023
COWAN-PHILLIPS 2 Part 1 It is impossible to exaggerate the significance of mental health education in schools. To promote students' mental health and wellbeing, schools play a critical role. Raising mental health awareness may help students individually as well as the school community at large. Mental health problems in children and adolescents are on the rise, with a significant increase in demand for mental health treatments, particularly during the COVID-19 epidemic. Mental health issues might hinder a student's capacity to study, interact with others, and succeed academically. Schools may provide a supportive climate that lowers stigma, improves early detection of mental health issues, and facilitates access to appropriate mental health treatments through increasing understanding about mental health. Mental health awareness in schools may assist educators and staff in recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental health difficulties, allowing them to give timely assistance and intervention to children who need it. Promoting mental health awareness may help to create a secure and welcoming school atmosphere in which children feel understood, supported, and welcomed. By including mental health education in the curriculum, educational institutions may provide students the critical skills they need to control their emotions, deal with stress, and form wholesome relationships. This education may involve themes such as stress management, self-care, emotional regulation, empathy, and conflict resolution. It may also entail educating pupils about various mental health disorders, their symptoms, and accessible options for treatment and support. Additionally, partnerships between schools and mental health professionals or organizations can increase the availability and accessibility of mental health services within the school environment. The
COWAN-PHILLIPS 3 presence of school counselors, psychologists, or social workers can guarantee that students receive the necessary support and interventions, whether through individual counseling, group therapy, or referrals to external mental health providers. Part 2 Mental health education in schools is critical for increasing student well-being. It serves to eliminate stigma, improves early detection of mental health disorders, develops a supportive atmosphere, provides students with necessary skills, and improves access to mental health resources. Schools may help to their students' overall growth and success by promoting mental health awareness and incorporating it into their policies and curriculum.
