4-1 Why Data Matters EDU-570 Foundation in Curriculum Design Professor: Gregory Mandalas Due Date: January 30, 2022
Information about students A student’s data profile can tell teachers a lot about a student’s learning and can help the teacher find the best way to support that student in the classroom. The data that is given in the data profile provided, looks at the students’ reading and math scores and if analyzed by the teacher can show how the student is performing compared to other grade level peers. Data can also be a good resource to inform teachers how the student feels about specific subjects. For example, in the data profile given, there are students who do well in Reading but are below in Math, or the other way around. This may not indicate interest in the subject but it is definitely good information to have for teachers. It helps to understand where they struggle and what their strengths are. If a child has trouble reading, word problems in math may also be a struggle even though they understand how to solve the actual problem. Teachers also need to interpret the data to be able to set up their lessons so that students are engaged and motivated. The data that is provided can help the teacher understand how to engage all students depending on their strengths or interests. That information can also help group students with students that will help each other be successful. For example, the student in the profile data that does a great job communicated might be best paired with the student who is auditory when working in groups or partners. Curriculum Design The data profile can also have an impact on curriculum design. If a specific lesson or standard is not well received by the class, the teacher will need to reflect and reevaluate how they teach that class. If there are gaps in the scores of the students, this can also help teachers to plan on what information needs to be taught. The teacher needs to constantly be monitoring the data and seeing how the students are progressing so they are able to adapt and adjust as needed.
Without the continuous monitoring, there is no way to see where the students are at any specific time. When designing the curriculum, knowing what the students need to learn is the first part, therefore using the data to answer that question can be helpful is effective lesson plans. Impact on Assessment Data allows teachers to have flexibility to adapt and create a better learning environment for their students. Like stated above, that data needs to be continually monitored by the teacher. Teachers cannot wait for the end of the year assessments to see how their students are doing; it would be too late at that point. Therefore, the teacher needs to create assessments that will provide that data throughout the year. The assessments need to have a purpose of showing a true picture of what the students know so that the teacher can decide how to proceed.
