Chap 4 – Ethernet Basics Question 4.1 1 Point Question: The TIA/EIA 568B standard defines the arrangement of 4 pair UTP cabling into RJ 45 connector. Using the text book or searching online find the color coded diagram then record the proper color wire for each of the pins of the RJ 45. Your Answer: Pin 1: orange stripe(white) Pin 2: orange Pin 3: green stripe(white) Pin 4:blue Pin 5: blue stripe(white) Pin 6:green Pin 7: brown stripe(white) Pin 8:brown Question 4.1 1 Point Question: Ethernet Networks first used hubs to connect multiple devices together. Modern Ethernet Networks use switches. Please describe why the industry moved away from hubs and started using switches? Your Answer: switches are more efficient, helping multiple devices connect together, switches are also able to be used on full duplex and half duplex. Making them faster on networks, while hubs run off half duplex, making them slower.

Chap 4 – Ethernet Basics Chap 5 – Modern Ethernet Question 4.3 2 Points Question: Legacy Ethernet could only communicate one way at a time (send/receive) This is like talking on a walk-talky to your friend. Modern Ethernet has the ability to send and receive signals at the same time. This ability is like todays cell phones. What are these two modes of communication called? Your Answer: half duplex & full duplex Question 4.4 2 Points Question: Both fiber and coper cables are used in modern Ethernet. Please provide two pros and two cons for each media type. Your Answer: two pros for fiber would be the high bandwidth, you can transmit large amounts of data. Another pro is the signal reach for fiber, transmitting data up to 25 miles. Two pros for copper would be the price, it is cheaper to install than fiber. Another pro would be durability, making it strong enough for outdoors. The cons of copper would be the bandwidth you get. The second con would be the not so good transmission distance, it can only reach so far. The cons for fiber would be the pricing, it is more expensive. A second con would be the availability for fiber, making it harder to get. Question 4.1 Question: Some media is called base band orthers are called broad band. What is the differents between baseband and broadband Your Answer: broadband transmits multiple data signals at the same time, while baseband transmits a singular data signal.
