Kayla Back Mnemonic Device: “Kayla’s Memory Board” The creation of this mnemonic device for this assignment was created by using my initials of KMB. The memory board background features the mnemonic device features as it is a memory board name. I used a memory board as the background and incorporated some memorable moments in the letters. I used some red effect to make the letters stand out and make it easier to read. I was trying to use immersion within the letters as I wanted to show people there are happy memories and this would lead them to feeling joy. The legibility of the text could be seen as good but could also be seen as them not being the same size. I made Kayla bigger than the others so it would pop out as it is my first name. I was hoping by making it bigger than the other words, it would stand out a little more. My goal is to have recognition over recall with this design so people will recognize this and know exactly what it is. As you can see with the word board, I used different types and colors of boards for the images because just because it is a memory board, there are other types of boards. Jillian White’s Coffee Mnemonic Device: “Jillian’s Java”
I decided to utilize an alliteration of my name to create “Jillian’s Java” (I love coffee, so I knew I had to choose this one!). It’s simple (maybe too simple?) but I felt like simplicity suited this project a bit more than the design being overly busy. I attempted to utilize Uniform Connectedness (“Elements that are connected by uniform visual properties, such as color, are perceived to be more related than elements that are not connected”) in order to create a sense of harmony. The shade of blue on the front of the coffee cup matches the blue circle around the graphic, the sparkles on either side of the circle, and the outline on the text. I didn’t want the shade of blue to be the most prevalent color/aspect of the design, but I wanted it to contrast against the coffee-colored background. I feel as though the Legibility (“The visual clarity of text, generally based on the size, typeface, contrast, text block, and spacing of the characters used”) of the text is effective, as I made the font size fairly large (about 31 pt.), chose a unique font style (“Anahaw”), and added a Splice effect with contrasting colors. By placing the graphic in the center of the design, I feel as though it Highlighted (“A technique for bringing attention to an area of text or image”) the fact that 1) this is a coffee shop and 2) places emphasis on the cute/soft aesthetic of the design. Everything, even the curved text, centers around the coffee cup graphic in the middle of the page. Speaking of curves, I decided to make almost every aspect of the design curved or rounded (hence the circular line, the rounded curve of the text, the curves of the coffee cup and the little saucer plate) to appeal to Contour Bias (“A tendency to favor objects with contours over objects with sharp angles or points”), which often provokes feelings of calmness and comfort in the viewer (in comparison to sharp or harsh edges, which can provoke feelings of unease). In order to emphasis the Figure-Ground Relationship , I tried to make it clear that the text and the graphic are the main figures (“objects of focus”) of the design, while the coffee stain, circular lines, and sparkles are the ground (“the rest of the perpecpful field”). This ties into emphasis, and wanting to draw the viewer’s attention to the main aspect of the design.
