Using the “How to Choose a Co-Teaching Model,” imagine you are co-teaching in a middle
school science inclusive classroom where students are frequently involved in small group work
completing labs and activities. Explain which of the co-teaching models you would be most
comfortable applying in this classroom situation and justify your selection. In replies to peers,
discuss the pros and cons of the selected models.
Good morning Professor Pearlman and class,
For the scenario of a middle school science class that does small groups to complete labs and
activities, the co-teaching model of one teacher and one assistant makes the most sense to me
without further background knowledge of the activities and labs performed. I think this model
will be useful because I have been involved in this scenario while I worked in a middle school.
The teacher presents the information necessary for the lab or activity and the other adult
observes, answers questions and gives additional assistance or instruction. The nice thing about
this model is that once the teacher is finished teaching the lesson and the students are ready to
engage in the lab or activity, both teachers can circulate throughout the room answering
questions, giving additional instruction and generally helping the groups of students that need
additional assistance.
Thank you,
Holly
DQ 2
Co-teaching can be challenging in an inclusive classroom. Discuss strategies co-teachers can use
to maintain a united partnership, even when they disagree. Explain why it is important that
disagreements not be evident to students and parents. In replies to peers, support or refute the
ideas presented and justify your response.
Good morning Professor Pearlman and class,
Teaching like any profession has its fair share of disagreements among staff. When teachers co-
teach collaboration and communication are essential to a successful teaching relationship. Co-
teachers should meet regularly to communicate concerns and praise, if people do not
communicate then they do not know what is working and what is not, and to ensure student
success teachers should be aware of strengths and weaknesses in the teaching. Teachers should
be honest with each other and tell each other their strengths and weaknesses so they can work
together to compliment each other’s teaching styles. Even when there is a disagreement, teachers
should work together for the greater good of the students and come to a solution that best serves
the student needs within the class and subject area. Children are perceptive, they will pick up on
any tension between staff members and this tension may cause acting out behavior. It is
important for teachers to remain professional in front of students to ensure they are not distracted
by the disagreement between teachers and they can focus on working. If parents sense tension
between two teachers they may be worried that the teachers are unable to focus on teaching the
children and this may be brought to the attention of the school principal. Teachers do not have to
be best friends outside of the school setting, but within the school in front of teachers and
student’s professional interaction for the benefit of the students within the class is the most
appropriate approach to co-teaching.
Thank you,
Holly
