Cultural Personal Profile. Jonathan Wright. University of Arizona Global Campus. COM 200 Interpersonal Communication. Nathan Sand. October 17, 2023.
When thinking about cultural profiles, another country pops into our minds, and nevertheless, the United States is to millions of people from many different cultures and countries. "The United States is the most complex cultural identity due to the size and the diverse heritage" (Wolf, 2018). I was not born in the United States of America; I was born abroad in Gorgas Army Hospital in the Republic of Panama, which makes me an American. So many cultures are represented in the United States. In this profile, I am going to focus on my cultural profile, demographics, traditions, family history, and how I learn to deal with different cultural differences. My demographic identity begins with being a Hispanic middle-class male, Jonathan Omar Wright, and I am 47 years old. English is my second language, as I grew up just speaking Spanish. Based on my professional background I am efficient in Arabic, Farsi, and Tagalog. I am a high school graduate and have some college with some odd technical certificates and a vast knowledge of medical treatment, equipment, and emergency medicine based in trauma working on my bachelor’s in health care management. My grandparents were very serious about church and made me go often as well; as I got older, I stopped going and decided to make my destiny and change what was written for me. I believe in God or a higher power due to the many instances I should have been dead and always came out of the situations unscathed. My family celebrates traditional American holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, New Year, and other holidays. This includes the food, but we add some different flavors; for instance on Thanksgiving there is turkey and stuffing, and we also have fried fish. The article written by Matt Salisbury states that "A public holiday celebrated around December 25th in the family home. A time for feasting, goodwill, generosity to the poor, the exchange of gifts and the
decoration of trees” (Salusbury, 2009). As I traveled to different countries, I adopted certain traditions from Islam, Judaism, and even Christianity, and looking at them closely, I learned how to fuse them together peacefully. My family does not have any solid cultural background or history. My mom’s side of the family is from Spain and Panamanian Indigenous; on my grandmother's side, they are French and Moroccan. My father’s side of the family is Indian and black, which is all I know since I did not have a close relationship with him. In the world we live in, everyone is exposed to many cultures and backgrounds. Treating people from different cultures with an open mind and respectful way is how I was raised and brought up through my family’s diversity by recognizing the values while engaging and trying to be understanding with people of different cultures and backgrounds and treating them equally. I approach each conversation or interaction with an open heart and mind, no matter who the person is. I like to engage and absorb the values of different cultures and beliefs, even if I do not share them. This is an advantageous approach since it allows me to have meaningful connections and not hinder my cultural focus, so I can prevent any underlying issues from being built just for plain ignorance. Culture surrounds our everyday life, and we must remember that we share an equal right to explore and understand it. This profile allowed me to share and learn information about myself and others to a deeper level than I thought I could reach.
