As a student, in the workplace, and even in your personal life , you will need to be able to solve problems and overcome challenges. Discover Have you ever lost your job unexpectedly? Perhaps you have had your bank account frozen the day before rent was due. Regardless of the specific situation, everyone experiences challenges in their lives, some of which are more complicated than others. Now that you have started your degree program, you may encounter new challenges, especially as you orient yourself to life as a student. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or confused or to even doubt your abilities. What’s important is to learn how to work through those feelings. A critical component to your success as a student lies in your ability to overcome challenges and persist toward achieving your educational goals. Reflect Think about the challenges you have experienced in your life. Consider how you originally felt about those challenges and the actions you took to overcome them. Reflect on what you learned from those experiences and how that knowledge can be used to overcome challenges you may experience as a student. For as long as I can remember, I have always struggled as a student in school. I had trouble with learning and remembering information. In elementary, middle, and high school I was in the lower classes, I remember telling myself “Well since I’m dumb, why should I even try?”. After high school, I knew that I would not be successful attending college. I enrolled at a technical school about an hour away and ended up dropping out the first semester. This obviously affected my mindset and self-esteem. In 2019, I moved and started college classes in town. Classes were going great, but after three years my advisor advised me that I would better succeed if I quit my job and attend classes full time. Like a lot of people, that would not work for me. It triggered past emotions and made me want to give up and quit. Instead, I immediately enrolled at an online teacher’s college, after a year that school did not give me the support and structure I needed. After talking with a friend a few months ago about all my struggles in finding the right school, she recommended University
of Phoenix. Today, I am a student here and I could not be more excited and motivated to achieve my goal as a future educator. My past experiences have taught me to work hard and not give up. Another important thing that keeps me motivated is my family. I come from a big family, and I am one out of 22 grandchildren. When I graduate, I will be the first grandchild to graduate from college with a degree. This is so important to me because I want my grandparents to be proud of me for achieving my goal, and never giving up in the end. I have had a lot of experience in learning what will keep me motivated to support my personal and educational goals. I know that I thrive with routine and structure, and having everything organized helps me feel in control. Before each week begins, I like to write down upcoming assignments and readings and their due dates; and decide which days of the week, and how long I will work on something. Another thing that helps me is class discussions, like this. I like to be able to read my peers’ discussions, relate to them, and learn from them. Act Before you draft your response to this discussion, be sure to read through the Week 1 materials. Respond to the following for your 175-word or more Initial response by Thursday: What challenges have you experienced as a student? What challenges do you anticipate having in your future career? How might your past experiences, your motivation, and your current mindset help or hinder your ability to overcome those challenges? What are some specific actions you can take to support your achievement of your educational and professional goals? Response Requirements: By Thursday , respond to the prompt above in a minimum of 175 words.
By Monday , reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Responses should each be 50 words, be constructive, and be professional. A peer response should move the discussion forward, and each point made therein should be of substance. Thus, responses that just repeat the peer’s ideas, lack connections to the peer’s ideas, or merely suggest that the peer has done a good job will not earn full credit. Any Week 1 Discussion responses posted after 11:59 pm AZ time on Monday of Week 1 will earn a score of zero. Discussions must take place in the week they are assigned. They cannot be made up.
