REFLECTING ON OUR SESSION: SUBMIT This activity will help you reflect on your coaching experience to identify what worked well and the areas of improvement for the next time you coach. While this is an individual assignment and your answers should be worded differently, you are encouraged to use feedback from discussions had in class, and collaboration with your group. Capture your reflections in the spaces below and create more space if required. The marking criteria for this reflection is the application of knowledge, so rely on the course readings and learning to shape your reflections (use terminology from the course readings/content). Make sure to provide specific and concrete examples. 1. HOW DID YOU FEEL PLANNING AND LEADING THE COACHING SESSION? DETAIL ANY CHALLENGES AND HOW YOU DEALT WITH THEM. I felt like we had a good plan for our coaching session, there definitely were some things we could’ve changed to make our session better but since we went first and didn’t have the opportunity to watch and hear the feedback from other presentations, I think we did a good job of planning and leading our session. One challenge I noticed we had was staying on time, our actual game only ended up being around 7 minutes because our warm-up and first activity took longer then we were expecting, so next time we will try and leave more time for the actual game. 2. TO WHAT EXTENT DID YOUR PARTICIPANTS ACHIEVE THE GOALS YOU INTENDED FOR THE SESSION? HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS? Throughout our session, our participants demonstrated our session goal of communication effectively. By adding rewards, it encouraged the athletes to demonstrate that they understood the topic, I was constantly hearing communication between teammates which in effect was building a stronger relationship. It was mentioned in our post-session discussion that our topic was effectively brought out throughout our warm-up and activities with a minor setback in activity 1 when we added 2 balls. 3. WHAT DID YOU DO THAT SUPPORTED ATHLETES’ LEARNING? (PROVIDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES AND HOW YOU CAN MAXIMIZE THESE LEARNINGS NEXT TIME) Throughout the game, we gave feedback to the athletes and complimented them when they did something that effectively showed our session topic. For example, if the athletes scored a point and were able to call out their teammate's name while doing it we responded with something like “Yes! Great job, I love the talking.” This way they learn that what they’re doing is correct and they will continue to do it. Next time, I think as a group we’re going to be more involved in the game and constantly be moving so we’re maximizing our ability to make sure the athletes are learning. Another way we supported athletes’ learning was by breaking down the topic session goal, we started with names, then added in passing and slowly introduced nets, offense, and defense. This didn’t overwhelm the athletes and still had them learning the fundamentals. I think we can emphasize this next time by adding in different forms of communication as well as stopping play to demonstrate where and why communication would’ve been important throughout. 4. WHAT DID YOU DO THAT WAS LESS SUPPORTIVE OF THEIR LEARNING, AND WHY DID IT
HAVE THAT EFFECT? HOW WILL YOU ADAPT FOR THE NEXT TIME? (PROVIDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES) There was one point in the game where I felt that our athletes were standing around too much and so we thought that adding a second ball in would be an effective way to get rid of this. By doing so, it brought down the emphasis on our session topic of communication because the athletes found it hard to focus on both balls and it was a potential safety hazard. Next time, if we find there is not enough involvement, we can separate the teams onto their own side of the court so that they can learn to communicate within their team and this way they won’t have to worry about being hit with a ball or focus on two games at once. 5. THINK OF 3 SPECIFIC LEARNINGS FROM THE COURSE THAT YOU WANT TO IMPROVE IN THE NEXT SESSION YOU COACH. HOW WILL YOU DO THAT? A specific thing from the course I want to improve on next time is the importance of not having our athletes be static. In our introduction, we had a ball-name game and our athletes were standing, next time I think we need to combine this into our warm-up so that right from the beginning they are moving. Another thing we can improve on next time is building athlete-coach relationships, we can do this by having more movement from us as coaches and more interaction with the athletes to create a better learning environment. Throughout the game, I found we had lots of positive feedback during the actual game but I think we could improve on how much we were talking to the athletes throughout the session because it’s important to be generous with positive feedback in all aspects of the session
