This assignment is intended to be completed after: o You have completed the Learning Materials on Climate Change (Module 7) o You have read this week's Course Reading: Cook, J. (2017) Welcome to Skeptical Science . Skepticalscience.com. Retrieved from https://skepticalscience.com/Welcome- to-Skeptical-Science.html Deliverables Answer the following questions. Be sure to include the full reference for the source of any information used to answer these questions, and include in-text citations where appropriate . It is expected that your answers will be based on information found in Cook (2017) and the Learning Materials from SCIE 221 The Environment (2022). Resources For how to format in-text citations, see the Humber Library’s APA in Minutes for in-text citations: https://library.humber.ca/help/apa-7th/text-citations#main-content You may find it helpful to re-do the “You Quote It, You Note It” tutorial at: https://library.acadiau.ca/research/tutorials/you-quote-it-you-note-it-2.html For a refresher on how to properly format some online sources, see the Humber Library’s APA in Minutes for for Websites: https://library.humber.ca/help/apa-7th/websites#main- content Question 1 On the Skeptical Science website (Cook, 2017), click on “View All Arguments” in the menu panel on the left. What is the response to the myth that Antarctica is gaining ice? Use a direct quote (in one sentence) for your answer, including all of the correct formatting in APA for a direct quote. (2 marks) “Satellites measure Antarctica losing land ice at an accelerating rate” (Cook, 2019). Reference: Cook, J. (2019). Arguments from Global Warming Skeptics and what the science really says . Skeptical Science. https://skepticalscience.com/argument.php
Question 2 While still on the View All Arguments page, click on the response to the myth that “there is no consensus.” Paraphrase the information about why scientists rely on expert consensus (Hint: you can find this information near the bottom of the page). Include all of the correct formatting in APA for paraphrased information. (2 marks) Scientist rely to those who have extensively studied complex problems and are skilled in data collection and analysis on what is considered evidence and how to assess it. This is a challenging task that requires specialized knowledge and skills, which can only be developed through years of education and training (The 97% Consensus on Global Warming, 2019). Reference: The 97% consensus on global warming . (2019). Skeptical Science. https://skepticalscience.com/global- warming-scientific-consensus.htm Question 3 Given that over 97 % of climate scientists agree that the climate change we are currently experiencing is caused by human activities, why do you think that there are still some politicians and business leaders who deny that climate change is a human-caused problem? (This is an opinion question, so you do not have to provide citations or references unless you used sources other than your own brain) (1 mark) Some politicians and business leaders deny climate change because they have their own agenda or financial interests. The fossil fuel industry has even spread misinformation to create doubt. This tactic of misinformation and denial has made it challenging to shape public opinion based on scientific facts. When people are constantly bombarded with conflicting information, it can be difficult to discern the truth. This leads to a sense of distrust and skepticism, making it harder to address the urgent issue of climate change. Also, people's political, religious, or ethnic identity can impact their willingness to accept an expert's opinion on a given issue. When scientific consensus conflicts with established ideological worldviews, people tend to seek out information that aligns with their beliefs, known as "motivated reasoning." This process can lead to a biased view of the truth. Reference: The Climate Reality Project. (2022, February 3). Climate Denial: Why It Happens and What To Do About It .
