Reflection Journal One Think carefully and thoughtfully to the service hours you just completed at your individual or group service project. Based on your experience and reflection about it, write a 2-3 full paragraph (6-8 sentences each) response to each of the following questions. 1.
What surprised you in working at Back- Pack Friends? How was the experience different than what you expected prior to the experience?
What was surprising to me was the number of volunteers that were all hands on. I was also surprise on the effort every volunteer demonstrated to fulfill a task. The coordinators did a great job explaining the process on how the assembly was going to take place. On this day Backpack friends had more than enough help to fill a large classroom. You had students taking orders from the coordinators and asking what else they needed to do. You can tell the coordinators of Backpack Friends were smiles from ear to ear. Finally, the most surprising part of this day was being able to know that I was
going to fulfill a student’s need. I had a purpose to fulfill and it filled my heart.
Since I had done some research and read about how successful their organization has been, I didn’t expect anything less from this non-profit organization. They were well organized and created a task to delegate specific job duties to all their volunteers. Everyone took part in the process and work diligently. I will say the best part of my experience was walking into a diversified organization. We had volunteers form different
ages, gender, and ethnicity and were all very kind; they made me feel welcome. At the

end of our packing I had already been able to connect with other volunteers and have set coffee dates with them. 2.
What need in the community does this agency address? Do you see this as a low, medium or high priority need? How does that assessment influence your perception of your work at the agency? All of times we don’t assess our surroundings and we miss out on what people are really feeling inside their souls. BackPack friends has been able to provide meals for students who are less fortunate than others. They have taken the stand to focus on their community and have partnered with Pflugerville ISD. BackPack friends started their journey delivering to 3 schools, as of today, they have expanded to nine campuses. Students are able to take a small bag (the size of their backpack) and take their meal home for the weekend. The size of the bags is discreetly small to fit the students backpack. This is a high priority because we have over 18 million children across the country who receive free or reduced lunch, but what happens to these students over the
weekend when the schools are closed? BackPack friends does not take weekends off, instead they are providing for others in need. Many families have been helped through difficult times through this program and, have been kind enough to pass along services to other schools. This is influenced by my pass experience. Growing up was not easy when you are low income. There were many times we would wake up Saturday mornings and only have bread for breakfast. If we had a backpack friends back in the day, we would be the first to sign up for assistance.

What readings in your text do you associate with the service hours you just performed? Present at least 2 frameworks or concepts in this analysis. I would have to say ethics and responsibility. Doing a good thing is ethically responsible but we don’t always think of these types of responsibilities because it is not part of our lifestyle. I had to hold myself accountable to make sure I was arriving on time
and meeting up at the right place and not get paid for it, really? I was wrong, you do get paid and you get paid with more than just a paycheck. It is the joy of providing for others
that are less fortunate and fulfilling a life so, your paycheck is someone else’s fulfillment
in their life. In addition, my responsibility is expressed as an ethical concept that formed
a duty and a purpose to the community. Ethics has a sense of responsibility to provide no harm to our customers. It is important to inspect all donations given to the organization to be sure all items are in good condition and are not expired. Best practice is to know the level of inventory and label all product as it is delivered to the facility. This is an important step to prevent from
tort law and be held liable. At BackPack friends everyone took responsibility to demonstrate good ethics and run a non-profit that serves their community. Recognizing
what the organization does for their community is truly making our society a better place. 4.
If you were doing this project as part of a corporate volunteer initiative would you feel the same or different about the experience? Why or why not?

I would feel the same if the corporate volunteer was strictly volunteer with no pay. My experience with BackPack friends was a great benefit that I ra

rely think of daily to reach out to our community. I have done “volunteer” once or twice for work (paid time); however, it was not the same impact and I didn’t feel like I was giving back. It is a different vision to serve the community and get paid because it doesn’t necessarily teach you the value of giving back to the community. This type of approach is very different than taking time from your day off to contribute your time to others. My volunteer time was enjoyable because I knew I was going to make a difference in improving the community. Also, this was an opportunity to meet new friends and expand my social life. It created a special bond with the other volunteers who were serving and, increased by social awareness and responsibility. My volunteer time helped me enhance my personal knowledge, grow from the new experience and, develop my interpersonal communication skills (Admin, 2013). I would consider myself an introvert so, I am not always one to approach someone and ask random question. This experience definitely gave me the sense of knowing what our community needs are.
