ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Jasper Cabigas OGL 340: Artificial Intelligence: The Human Side Bill Erwin 02/07/24 Total Word Count: 1580 words
PAPER 1 ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE What Level of Awareness Exists? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on a rise. While films like "I, Robot", "Ex-Machina", and "The Matrix" initially piqued my curiosity, as AI becomes more and more integrated into our everyday life and my comprehension has grown. I begin to understand that it has the ability to make our lives easier, but it also has drawbacks. My own analysis points to a mediocre level of awareness in comparison to others. Although I first focused on the advantages of AI, such as the easy access to information provided by smartphones, my growing knowledge raises questions about the potential negative effects of AI on society, the economy, and psychology. I found that there is a direct relationship between education and AI awareness through interview data, with more educated people expressing greater concern about possible problems. It's interesting to note that individuals with little understanding concentrated on the advantages and fantastical features of robot supremacy. It also seems to be related to age, younger and better educated people indicating greater unpreparedness for the changes that are about to occur. Based on my observations, I propose raising awareness of the difficulties associated with AI. By drawing attention to the excitement surrounding its possible benefits and financial gains while warning against moving too swiftly into development without taking wider effects into account. I draw attention to the possibility of permanent problems such as insufficient laws, ethical issues, employment losses, and psychological and societal changes. The message is clear: we need to
spread the word and get ready in advance for the revolutionary changes artificial intelligence will bring about. The Economic/Political Impact of AI Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to change the world, but there are drawbacks in terms of how it will affect politics and the economy. There is no denying the possibility of advancement, but avoiding potential hazards calls for cautious thought. The loss of jobs is a big worry. Millions of jobs have already been displaced by automation, which is expected to increase (Yang, 2019). Automation is powered by AI. The threat of widespread unemployment may put pressure on social safety nets and may stoke unrest in the community. A diverse strategy is essential: job creation efforts should focus on less vulnerable industries, reskilling programs could prepare workers for the AI-driven economy, and strong social safety nets can offer short- term assistance during career changes. Growing economic disparities present another difficulty. According to Lee (2018), the adoption of AI carries the potential of escalating already-existing inequities, with countries with healthy economies and AI capabilities standing to gain disproportionately. This "AI divide" has the potential to worsen the wealth disparity in the world, causing political unrest and decreasing international collaboration. International cooperation is necessary to close this gap. To level the playing field, specific investments in infrastructure and education must be made, as well as the sharing of technological innovations and the promotion of knowledge transfer to emerging countries. And last, differences in pay have the potential to worsen already-existing income inequality. Businesses using AI technology may acquire unwarranted market dominance and raise wages above those in other sectors, hence escalating social unrest and economic stagnation. Policies that support equitable salaries and income

redistribution are necessary to mitigate this. To guarantee that everyone benefits from AI-driven prosperity, measures to strengthen minimum wage regulations, adopt fair taxes, and investigate universal basic income ideas should be considered. Through recognition and proactive resolution of these obstacles, we can harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while reducing its hazards. The ultimate objective is to build a world in which AI is a vehicle for shared prosperity, enabling people to realize their full potential as individuals and as a society. The Sociological Impact of AI While the AI has major implications for politics and the economy, but its effects on society may be greatest. Our focus needs to be on three main areas: changing nature of work, the privacy and safety concerns it will have on society and impact on social interaction and human connections. The changing landscape of work, powered by AI-powered automation, poses enormous challenges. It creates anxiety and unpredictability while upending established job sectors and bringing about new chances. Proactive action is required in response to issues with widespread unemployment, skill disparities, and economic inequality. Initiatives aimed at reskilling and upskilling people are essential for providing them with the abilities required for occupations driven by AI. Moreover, industries less vulnerable to automation should be given priority in job creation initiatives, and entrepreneurship should be encouraged. Secondly, the growing use of AI in data collecting and analysis is accompanied with privacy problems that raise concerns about the erosion of individual autonomy. Systems like social scoring, tailored advertising, and facial recognition have the potential to invade people's privacy and lead to surveillance society. Stronger data privacy rules are required to guarantee
individual control over personal data and to restrict its collection and usage to mitigate these worries. AI design must take ethics into account to strike a balance between innovation and personal liberty and privacy. Educating and raising public awareness are essential to enabling people to comprehend and control their digital footprints. Lastly, it is impossible to ignore how AI affects human connection and social relationships. An over dependence on AI for decision-making and communication may erode social skills and face-to-face relationships. Promoting human-centered AI is crucial to reducing this, as is creating technologies that enhance rather than replace human relationships. The importance of social and emotional intelligence cannot be overstated, since it promotes interpersonal communication, empathy, and emotional literacy. Initiatives to encourage digital detoxification are also necessary to encourage responsible technology use and strong social ties. The Psychological Impact of AI Although artificial intelligence (AI) has a lot of potential, its psychological effects need to be carefully considered from a number of viewpoints. First of all, concerns about future job possibilities can arise due to the rapid growth of technology and automation. Fear of being left behind by AI and possibly losing one's work makes people more anxious about their existential situation. Uncertainty regarding AI's place in the industry can cause worry and anxiety about one's future job path, which can be detrimental to mental health. Secondly, feelings of social loneliness and isolation may worsen if artificial intelligence is relied upon excessively for communication and pleasure. People can find it easier to interact with technology than to go for real human connections as AI systems offer convenient and personalized experiences. A sense of alienation and isolation from others could result from this
reliance on AI-driven interactions, which could weaken fundamental interpersonal abilities. As a result, people could find it difficult to establish lasting connections and feel less a part of their communities. Finally, the development and use of AI presents difficult ethical issues. Concerns about discriminatory practices, algorithmic biases, and privacy violations are serious. If the development and application of AI systems results in harm or unethical behavior, those engaged in these processes may experience moral unease or guilt. It takes serious thought and devotion to moral principles to navigate these ethical conundrums, ensuring that AI technologies are created and used ethically. Other Impacts of AI A major shift in the geopolitical landscape is occurring as countries compete to become leaders in artificial intelligence (AI). As nations realize the strategic value of technology innovation in maintaining the national security and boosting economic competitiveness. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have a significant impact on national security because they may improve cybersecurity, military prowess, and intelligence collection. To obtain a tactical edge in the contemporary battlefield, nations are making significant investments in cyberwarfare capabilities, autonomous weapons, and AI-powered defense systems. Monitoring threats, spotting weaknesses, and defending national interests all depend heavily on the development of AI-enabled surveillance, reconnaissance, and predictive analytics systems. Additionally, the economic competitiveness is inextricably linked to the competition for supremacy in AI. Innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) promotes job creation, economic growth, and global competitiveness by advancing technology, upending industries, and

increasing productivity. To stay competitive in the global economy, governments are putting policies in place to encourage innovation ecosystems, draw in top talent, and promote AI research and development. Conclusion In conclusion, the widespread incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into diverse facets of society yields a plethora of consequences across the economic, sociological, and psychological domains. AI has many potential advantages, like greater productivity and creativity, but there are also serious drawbacks and issues that need to be addressed in order to avoid problems down the road. It is essential to approach the integration of AI into society with caution, forethought, and a commitment to addressing the accompanying dangers and concerns in light of these complex problems. We can leverage AI's revolutionary potential while minimizing its negative effects by strengthening ethical frameworks, emphasizing mental health, supporting human-centered design, and aggressively tackling economic inequality. At the end of the day, creating a future where AI acts as a catalyst for constructive societal change and human flourishing requires a cooperative and multidisciplinary approach.
