UNIT 4 ASSESSMENT – RACE, ETHNICITY, MORALITY, AND GENDER 1 Introduction Alona Yaun Herzing University Thesis The mass media promotes images of inequality through exclusion and exaggeration of difference, as well as equality by leveling racial, ethnic, and gender differences. Body Mass media, defined as the primary means of mass communication such as broadcasting, publishing, and the internet, has the power to influence society positively and negatively. In addition to television, newspapers, magazines, and radio, mass media also encompasses politics, beauty, and the economy. I concur with Hook's perspective on the matter. Her statement, "I think thinking critically is at the heart of anybody transforming their life and I really believe that a person who thinks critically, who, you know, may be extraordinarily disadvantaged, materially, can find ways to transform their lives" (ChallengingMedia, 2006, 3:30), resonated deeply with me. She further emphasizes that society often leads us to believe that basic skills, such as obtaining a degree, are sufficient for survival. However, this notion lacks depth and authenticity, as real-world experience and critical thinking hold immense value. Hook illustrates this point by comparing

Yale students are aware that they are considered the best and brightest, having been constantly told that they have a promising future. Yet, this perception is not solely a result of their education or intelligence. It is influenced by external encouragement. Mass media both promotes images of equality by bridging racial, ethnic, and gender differences, and perpetuates inequality through exclusion and exaggeration of these differences. It engages in both aspects to an equal extent. The media plays a significant role in raising awareness about various cultures and groups, contributing to the promotion of equality.
