Part #1: Long term SMART Goal I want to achieve that will help me in my career.
My long-term SMART Goal is to become a certified paralegal within the next two years. This goal is specific
as it focuses on obtaining a certification, measurable as it has a clear endpoint, achievable as it is within my control, relevant to my career as a paralegal, and time-
bound as it has a specific timeframe of two years. Part #2: Create a brainstorming list of 8 or more short-term goals that
will lead me to achieving my long-term SMART Goal.
I will dedicate my time to studying and completing the necessary classes and training to become a certified paralegal.
I will research and find a paralegal networking event to expand my professional connections.
I will develop a study schedule to effectively manage my time and ensure success in my paralegal program.
I will continue to gain crucial experience needed for a successful career as a paralegal at my current place of employment, which will allow me to apply my knowledge in a real-world setting.
I will research and locate legal conferences, seminars, and workshops to connect with professionals in this field.
In addition to completing the paralegal program, I will research and identify certifications that are highly regarded within the legal industry and work towards achieving them.
I will also enroll in courses and workshops that focus on legal writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communication.
I will participate in webinars or seminars to stay informed about changes in laws, regulations, and industry trends.
Part #3 Develop 3 short-term SMART Goals that could lead to achieving your long-term SMART Goal.
Weekly Goals:
Attend a paralegal networking event to expand professional connections.
Complete my online courses on legal public speaking
and legal writing to enhance my skills.
Monthly Goal:
Volunteer my time to attend at least 1 online seminar
or workshop to obtain crucial knowledge needed to become an effective paralegal.
Part #4 Reflect, in 100 words or more, on how I used the SMART model in my short-term and long-term goals.
In setting my short-term goals, I applied the SMART model to ensure their effectiveness and alignment with my long-term goal. Each goal was specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. By utilizing the SMART model, I have been able to set clear and obtainable goals that will aid in my career as a paralegal. The specificity of my long-term goal, becoming a certified paralegal, provides a clear direction for my professional development. Additionally, the short-term goals I have identified,
such as attending an online seminar or workshop, completing legal writing courses, and attending a networking event, are all measurable and achievable within a specific timeframe.
The relevance of these short-term goals to my long-term goal is evident. Networking events will allow me to establish connections within the legal community, while online courses will
enhance my legal writing skills. Volunteering time to attend a online seminar or workshop will provide practical knowledge and contribute to my overall understanding of the legal field.
Setting SMART Goals is essential for career growth as a paralegal. By identifying a long-term goal and breaking it down
into short-term objectives, I can effectively plan my path to success. Through the SMART model, I have established specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals that will undoubtedly contribute to my professional development as a paralegal.
