Making Connections
Having a clear understanding of my beliefs, values, and assumptions is essential to be able to better navigate the world around me. Life experiences, family, and culture strongly influence and
shape my values and sense of right and wrong. Regularly reflecting on and evaluating my beliefs
helps me develop a critical perspective on historical and current events and their impact on my daily life. This, in turn, enables me to make informed decisions and address my biases by gathering information objectively and maintaining a clear state of mind. Making informed decisions based on strong beliefs and values and avoiding assumptions is essential. It’s essential to question my assumptions to broaden my thinking to arrive at better conclusions. By evaluating
my beliefs, values, and assumptions in various situations, such as reading news articles or social media posts from family members, we can learn to approach them objectively. This means asking questions, cross-checking information, and avoiding miscommunicated or incorrect information. Going back to school, I've had the opportunity to see how historical inquiry skills can be applied both personally and in my education. It was only after becoming a mom five years ago that I really began to learn how to apply these skills in my everyday life. I learned to think critically, make informed decisions, show empathy, and communicate effectively; overall, it helped me grow personally. I've been using these skills daily to evaluate and navigate my personal and professional relationships, and they have helped me avoid significant conflicts while strengthening my relationships. Critical thinking skills are essential for evaluating situations before acting. They help me slow down, step back, and evaluate all the pieces. I use these skills both in my education and personal life. Informed decision-making has helped me make better choices with my education, classes, and schoolwork. Knowing I've taken the necessary steps to evaluate my decisions and that I haven’t been impulsive feels good. In my personal life, making informed decisions gives me more control over my choices and a feeling of confidence in them. As a single mom with a lot on my plate, I know that my choices won't have a negative impact on those closest to me. Communication and empathy go hand in hand and have helped me in my personal, educational, and professional life. I use communication skills in various forms, such as verbal, written, visual, and through media. By incorporating these skills into my professional, educational, and personal relationships, I can express my needs more effectively and respect others' needs more openly. Communication and empathy are vital skills that help me be open and
respectful while correctly asking for what I need. Returning to school has taught me how to express myself more effectively and respectfully, resulting in more opportunities and keeping everyone's boundaries safe.
