COMM 245 / The Folklore of Alcohol Hair of the Dog Response Questions Episode: Wine Due Date: March 15, 2024 Please answer the following questions. Given the nature of the questions, all answers are confidential. Please double-space papers and use a 12 point font. Please be certain to include your name on the paper. The purpose of these Response Questions is to hold students accountable to listening to the Hair of the Dog audio lecture series. Although the answers do not need to be lengthy, they should reflect such a commitment. Recall that successful completion of all of them guarantees a B for a final grade. As a rule of thumb, extremely brief responses may be returned for further information. 1. How do you interpret the story of Dionysus as detailed in this episode? In your opinion, what important themes emerge in this tale, especially concerning wine? There is no single way to interpret this myth, so feel welcome to ruminate. I would interpret the story of Dionysus as one of the greats that surrounds wine and how wine became to be throughout the ages leading up to present day. I felt that you did a great job of explaining how the story of Dionysus has impacted individuals and societies with the symbolism that Dionysus brings to cultural practices. I would also include that Dionysus is a Greek creature that involves cultural practices and is obscure to the human eye. Dionysus is one that differentiates civilization of the tensions included from the encounters on nature that would end up harming how wine would end up being made. One important theme that I want to emphasize is going to be transformation. This is because of the rebirth that Dionysus gave to wine. Since Dionysus went on such a long journey for the revival of grapes and vines in order for winemaking to be even possible. Now because of this journey that Dionysus went on were able to see different civilizations and cultures be able to experience how wine has made a difference and allows for people to come together to make winemaking as global as it is today. The second important theme that I wanted to bring up is going to be religion. This is because as talked about in the podcast wine has collectively started to make an impact on Christianity. Now more practices are using wine in their rituals, this highlights the parts of when communion is going on and if there is a sacrament going on, this usually involves a certain type of wine for this ritual to be able to happen. To wrap things up the story of Dionysus themes are revolved around in my eyes as transformation and religion because of the new cultural practices being introduced, new human experiences to wine,
and how much happier humans are with the celebrations used for wine. These themes all come together as a story for Dionysus because of the journey that he took for the creation and figure as wine, now Dionysus is used as that figure of how winemaking has been saved and introduced to civilization. 2. Periodically, I will record this episode again to include new information or to contemporize the material better for undergraduates. In your opinion, which part of the current episode needs to remain? Why do you think that information is essential for undergraduates in this introductory class? Please be specific and explain your reasons in detail. One part that I believe should stay in the episode is how you interpreted the 10,000 types of grapes that can be included when making different types of wines. For example, vinery he said “vinery has just the right amount of sugar content, acidity, and tannins to produce the right amount of wine for tasting”. This is because this wine has the right amount of ethanol to be preserved for such long and work very well. Not many grapes are going to have such success and production of alcohol because of different circumstances like having harvesting seasons. I would also keep in the different types of wines such as red, whites, and roses because he goes in def about the different types of skins that your able to make such wines to be able to be produced. Which is because certain types of skins are going to give the color to the wines, which is why these different types of wines have their color. He also goes in depth having sparkling wine and still wine like champagne and persico have carbon dioxide from the ethanol, which I found interested because I didn’t know that, so I felt that was important information to keep included. Terror I felt was important because he talks about how this creature can eat at your grapes, which is also called folactra, which is a little bugs that ended up invading Europe and wiped out all the grapes and vines, which then ended up having to take the roots of the American grapes and connect them to save the wine industry. I love how you go into detail about Christianity and religion and how wine plays a big role in that concept. This is because I’m also a Christian and I can see how much wine has played a role when I go to church or if were saying a pray. Many activities and sacraments in Christianity have to do with using different types of wines, usually red wine, but I feel this needs to be included because of the impact that wine has on a certain religion. I look forward to reading your answers and please trust that they will benefit future generations of students. Cheers to you!
