Topic 5: Assessment tools 1.
Identify four
ways that you could conduct formative assessment to document students’ learning for the teacher. 1. Analysis of Students Work
Students' homework, quizzes and standardised tests can be used as evidence
of student learning.
2. Strategic Questioning Strategies
Strategic questioning
methods can be used with the students as daily classroom practice. The main aim of questioning
is the academic progress of students.
3. Think-Pair-Share
It is one of the simplest formative assessment strategies.
As a classroom practice, the teacher asks a question, and students write down their responses. Then students sit in pairs
to engage in effective classroom discussions
about their answers
. The teacher moves around the classroom and gains insight into the student
learning process
by listening to students' responses. Then, the students share their answers with the whole class.
4 5. One-Minute Papers
One-minute papers
are mostly carried out before the day ends. They provide
an opportunity for students to answer a brief question
. Then, these papers are collected and assessed by the teacher to gain insight into the student learning process
. One-minute papers provide the formative assessment practices
that are found to be more beneficial when done on a regular basis.

2.
Identify two
reasons why a teacher or SLSO may use the Numeracy Progression when supporting a student’s numeracy skills. (40-50 words) 1.To locate the literacy and numeracy development of students and identify the literacy and numeracy development that should follow.
Teachers can use
the progression
s to support the development of targeted teaching and learning programs and to set clearer learning goals for individual students.
For example, teaching decisions can be based on judgements about
student capability that relate to a single indicator rather than all indicators at
a level.
2.
To facilitate
a shared professional understanding of literacy and numeracy development.
3.
What is summative assessment? Provide an example of summative assessment.
Summative assessment is
any method of evaluation performed at the end of a unit that allows a teacher to measure a student's understanding, typically against standardized criteria
. Example can be the test at the end of the unit or term.
4.
Provide 2
ways you could assist the teacher to implement a summative assessment. 1.
Essays
-Students write an essay on a specified topic/argument, within given parameters, for example, word count, use of different sources etc
2.
Multiple choice questions (MCQs
)- Students are required to select the correct answer from a list of possible answers to a question. 5.
Explain the difference between summative assessment and standardised testing?
Summative assessment is often considered high stakes. Summative assessment methods may include exams and quizzes. Summative assessments almost always take place at the end of a course unless a teacher decides to break a course into more manageable chunks. They’re often cumulative, and they’re used to evaluate a student’s long-term information retention. In summative assessments like final exams, you can include questions from the first week or two of a course to ensure students retained introductory information. they evaluate how prepared someone is to go to the next academic level.
Standardised tests are used to assess a student’s understanding of skills and knowledge in comparison to other students. It allows for comparisons to be made among schools regarding
student achievement, ensures accountability for teachers, and has the ability to inform instruction for educators.
A
summative assessment is generally defined as the collection and analysis of information about one or more students. But When tests are standardized, this means tha
t a particular group of students will take the same test that will be scored and analysed the same way.
6.
What is the purpose of standardised testing? The most important benefit of Standardized tests is that it gives teachers
detailed information about the kinds of skills their students have mastered
and those they need to learn.
For example- NAPLAN to test Australian students' skills in both literacy and
numeracy
.
Other purposes for standardized testing are to compare student
achievement, to serve as an accountability measurement for teachers
/schools and to provide the necessary information for data driven
instruction.
