1. The role of culture in learning is for teachers to understand how culture affects what is included in the classroom. Two fundamental ideas that are connected to an individual’s stance on culture are what he or she understands culture to be and how an individual understands how culture serves in language and academic learning. Three ways that teachers can incorporate culture into the curriculum by students seeing their individual cultures represented in terms of contributions that are made to the world, students need to see positive role models and leaders in different professions to see how their culture has positively impacted the world, and include texts that reflect stories, histories, and characters that are relatable to students. Teachers incorporating different cultures into the curriculum can avoid students from feeling that school is not comfortable or relevant and can lead to avoidance instead of engagement. 2. Three strategies for creating an inclusive environment are providing accommodations for students with disabilities, establishing good rules of interaction, and learn and use students’ names. I would utilize providing accommodations for students with disabilities in my classroom by having a clear understanding of what the accommodations are for each of my students, so I know how to implement them with my students. If there is an accommodation I don’t understand or I want to make sure I am implementing, it correctly I would connect with the special education teacher for further clarification. I would want to get to know my students, so I
know the best ways to support them in the classroom. In my classroom, I would incorporate different ways of instructing the students because each student learns differently. I would utilize establishing good rules of interaction in my classroom by first setting up classroom rules with the students to discuss what behaviors are unacceptable and acceptable. When discussing what behaviors are unacceptable and acceptable, I would make sure that each
student knows exactly what the behavior is and what it looks like by providing examples. The list and examples of unacceptable and acceptable behaviors would be posted in the classroom for the students to refer to daily. When the students are showing acceptable behaviors in the classroom, I would praise them for their positive behaviors in the classroom. I would utilize learning and using students’ names in my classroom by asking each student what
they prefer to be called. Learning and using students’ names is important in the classroom to build classroom community, increase student engagement that will help the students feel more
comfortable, and ensure that students feel comfortable asking their teacher for help. 3. Two ways that parental support benefits ELs are the students adapt well to the school and the student can demonstrate better social skills. 4. A way to involve the surrounding community in the school would be to have a campus tour, and a meet and greet with teachers and administration to discuss the school's curriculum and values. I would see approval for this idea by going to the principal of the school with my idea to involve the community. If the principal approves my plan for the community, I would then make a presentation to the superintendent of the district to receive approval to begin planning the event. I would solicit the idea to the community to get involved with this school by posting on social media and displaying posters throughout the community for the event.
