Write a 500-750 word post detailing an example of a diagnostic assignment and an intervention assignment you might use with a fictional client family. Include details about your fictional client family, and explain how, as a speech language pathologist, you will know if these types of assignments are successful with your created example family. Explain why one of these assignment types might be more successful than the other for your fictional family. For the purpose of this assignment, we will begin with a fictional client family, The Johnson's. The Johnson's are a family of three, two parents and one child; both the mother and the father work full time, and the child, Jake, is 4 years old. Jake was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and due to the ASD diagnosis, Jake is experiencing a delay in language development.  During an interview with Jake’s parents, I used “respectful listening,” so they could address any concerns they had, previous treatments they tried, or any expectations they were hoping for by receiving speech therapy services. They expressed concern in his delayed language development, and they reported that he has some language but it not always functional. Jake was diagnosed with autism when he was 2 years old, and they have now placed him into an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program, in their local school district. However, when discussing their concerns, they stated that they had not seen a big improvement in his speech while attending school. The school district is also experiencing budget cuts, and they are providing very limited speech resources, including speech therapy sessions with a Speech Language Pathologist. This has led the parents to seek additional speech services outside of the school district, in hopes to build their son’s language skills. A diagnostic assignment for the Johnson family might include assessing the language skills Jake currently has in different environments, which may include his home, his school, or other commonly visited places. As the practicing speech language pathologist, I will observe Jake as he interacts with his family and others when he attempts to communicate with them in each environment. In addition to observing his speech and language, we will also administer formal assessments to evaluate Jake’s receptive and expressive language abilities. Then, to explain the intervention assignment to his family, I will discuss with them that it is a client-centered approach and will take the form of general stimulation. When using the general stimulation approach, we will “not focus on specific communication targets but instead support(s) all communication attempts and provide(s) a broad range of communication models” (Simmons, p. 171, 2020). This type of intervention assignment will encourage Jake in each attempt he makes to communicate and allows him to naturally choose the targets, or topics of discussion. As a speech language pathologist, I would know if these assignments were successful by monitoring the progress Jake made in our speech therapy sessions. For example, the assignments would be considered successful if there was an improvement in his receptive and expressive language skills. In order to determine if one of these assignments might be more successful for my clients family, I would attempt to provide both assignment services and then compare the data retrieved from
both, and evaluate which assignment Jake showed the most progress. However, as the SLP, I do believe that the intervention assignment will provide Jake with the most opportunities for success in building his language skills. The intervention assignment can be practiced in speech with the SLP and also at home with his parents, so there is a level of consistency in all environments.
