Hi Hannah!
I enjoyed reading your post, you included some really great things! I like that
you mentioned hands-on activities to promote understanding of concepts. I completely agree. For my practicum, I am in a 5th grade math class. My host
teacher uses hands-on activities and manipulatives quite often. One activity in particular that was very hands-on that really stood out to me was an activity where each student needed to measure their own and 9 friends height in inches. Once students had finished measuring, they were to find the mean, median, and mode of their data. This activity gave students the opportunity to be very hands on and involved in their learning. I also liked how you mentioned independent practice for students as well. I think that this is very important also. Without independent practice, we do not know what each student knows. I think that it is so important to find balance with group activities, partner work, and with independent practice. Thank you for your thoughts!
Hi Jacqueline,
It was really great to read your discussion and hear your thoughts on this week's topic. Assessments are such an important tool to use in the classroom. Formative assessments are a great way to see where students are at in understanding what is being taught, it allows teachers the opportunity to reteach information in different way to help reach all students.
Summative assessments help teachers see what students learned throughout the lessons and can still give teachers a chance to see what may need to be retaught if given the time. Assessments allow teachers to see how students are doing and improve if needed.
Drill and practice are other great tools to utilize in the classroom. They give student the chance to understand and use what is being taught until they understand it. Drill and practice go hand in hand with each other but are just used a little differently in the classroom. When you want students to understand a concept you have them practice it and when you want them to remember what to do for an algorithm or other task you have them drill. These can both look very different in the classroom but are very useful tools to help students learn and understand what is being taught.
