Task Description
When it comes to delivering speeches, you must support your speech. This assignment allows you to
explore various ways to support your speech, while applying what you have learned. You will be asked to watch the YouTube video, “Leonardo DiCaprio’s Powerful Climate Summit Speech”. After viewing this video, fill out the following grid:
Supporting Your Speech
In your own words, define the term, support.
Support is the assistance or foundation needed in order to produce a product.
According to your textbook, list five items you can use to support your speech.
1- Use illustrations 2- Use descriptions and explanations
3- Provide definitions
4- Use analogies
5- Use Statistics as Support
Apply an example from “Leonardo DiCaprio’s Powerful Climate Summit Speech” for each item previously listed, illustrating how the speaker, Leonardo DiCaprio, did or did
not utilize those items. If the speaker did not offer a certain source of support in their speech, offer advice on how he could modify his speech.
In Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech, he used brief illustrations to help the audience put into
perspective how serious the issue of climate change truly is. DiCaprio also used de-
scriptions to help improve his illustrations he was presenting, and he also used expla-
nations in his speech to emphasis on the changes that need to be made to prevent cli-
mate change for reaching a point of no return. One thing I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio lacked in his speech was having definitions. I think that if he would have added a defi-
nition of what climate change was it would add more support to his argument. Di-
Caprio also lacked analogies in his speech, however, if he were to add an analogy it would strengthen his argument and allow for the audience to have a better and more personal understanding of the issue. Leonardo DiCaprio used statistics in his speech for support. By using statistics the audience is able to see a different perspective on the issue in the form of numbers and real life data.
