Point Value: 20 points
Rationale: Allows you to apply criteria for an ethical speaker.
Task Description
When it comes to delivering speeches, you have a responsibility to deliver honest and fair infor-
mation. This assignment allows you to recognize the importance of ethics, while applying what you have learned. You will be asked to watch the YouTube video, “The Strawberry Lady”. After
viewing this video, fill out the following grid:
The Strawberry Lady
In your own words, define the term, ethics.
Ethics is a set of moral principles that help guide one’s decision making process or actions based on what they feel to being morally wrong or right.
According to your textbook, list the five criteria for being an ethical speaker.
1- Have a clear and responsible goal
2- Use sound evidence and reasoning
3- Are sensitive and tolerant of differences
4- Are honest
5- Avoid plagiarism
Apply an example from “The Strawberry Lady” for each criteria previously listed, illustrating how the speaker, Christine Zust, did or did not meet those criteria. If the speaker did not meet
a certain criterion, offer advice on how she could modify her speech.
In Christine Zust’s speech, “The Strawberry Lady,” she made her goal of informing the audi-
ence on credibility clear by repetitively mentioning the foundation of what credibility is based upon. Zust also was honest in her speech, and remained honest throughout her speech by in-
corporating her life experience while encountering credibility. Also, by Christine Zust speaking about her life experience, she was able to avoid plagiarism due to having an authentic story. I also believe that Zust was respectful and sensitive of potential differences that audience might
have, because Christine avoided mentioning any topics that might hold controversy or may cause any discomfort. Zust also used sound evidence and reasoning in her speech, “The Strawberry Lady.” Christine was able to provided sound evidence and reasoning by providing an example of when she first had to rely on someone else’s credibility, and she explained the characteristics that allowed her to believe this person was credible.
