Key and Peele's "Black Ice" What do you think is the broader point? I think the broader point of this video is how media can and does portray/create stereotypes and fear among society on certain topics, or in this case “black ice” which refers to black people being dangerous. What does the clip suggest to you about U.S. culture and cultural diversity? The clip suggests to me that U.S. society consists of stereotypes and biases, lacking cultural awareness and diversity. What is your takeaway from this video? My takeaway from this video is how easily media platforms can influence both positively and negatively to certain groups of people. I feel that comedy is often used to approach such topics like racism or stereotypes, and in my opinion, I don’t feel that addressing racial stereotypes with humor is appropriate, and not something I watch. #2 Mad Men "I'd like to buy the world a Coke." This clip points to a number of themes in U.S. culture. What are these themes? The themes in U.S. culture that this clip points to are hierarchy, diversity, and patriotism. What does this clip suggest to you about U.S. culture, U.S. identity construction, and U.S. diversity? This clip suggests to me that U.S. culture struggles with identity and how everyone tries to conform to things, like buying a soda. What do you make of the final ad, from a 1971 commercial? Considering this ad is from 1971, I was shocked at the amount of diversity shown as this was a time of segregation and racism. The ad illustrated peace and love with people coming together as one, during a time when this was uncommon. Showing how advertisements can influence individuals’ decisions in everyday life, as this ad was one of the most popular after being turned into a song.
