I-LEARNED CHART
(Adapted from Johnson, 2008)
TOPIC: Things I learned about cultural competency. This week’s reading assignment: ONE thing that impacted my learning/understanding
“There is a great deal of research and numerous court decisions to support the fact that standardized tests (particularly intelligence and achievement tests) are often culturally and linguistically biased against students from backgrounds different from the majority culture.”
This impacted my learning because I work in a district that is predominitantly Hispanic, and it has
always beem concerning to me if our students were being misdiagnosed. I always questioned if their deficits in their academic performances have more to do with a language barrier than dyslexia or another learning disability. Searching the internet: One website
“
Standardized tests intend to measure intelligence and general knowledge, but
they are normed based on the knowledge and values of the majority groups, which can create bias against minority groups, including gender, race,
community status, and persons with different language backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and culture. “ (Kim, K. & Zabelina, D. 2015)

I have been a special education teacher for 8 years, and from my experience I have noticed that majority of my students who have been classified as having an Other Health impairment are listed as
having ADHD or ADD. The students with ADHD

I interviewed the diagnostician at my school about
her experience with working in our district and the
evaluation process for ELL students. In Dallas Independent School District TELPAS scores as well as teacher observations are used to determine
if the students will receive nonverbal assessments,
or be assessed in their native language. She stated
not being impeded by his or her disability. Although these students do not receive an IEP, they do receive small group. As a special education teacher it is often that I will get section 504 students in my small groups for testing. that it is a crucial part of an assessment process in order to ensure that you have mat the legal requirements for the evaluation is making sure the
assement is culturally and linguistically appropriate for the student. References
