I-LEARNED CHART (Johnson, 2008) TOPIC: Things I learned about bias in standardized testing: 1. This week’s reading assignment: One thing that impacted my learning/ understanding “Standardized tests have the potential for test bias. As much as test creators try to do away with testing bias, it may be impossible to rid tests of it altogether” Pierangelo & Giuliani, 2017, pg 22). Districts now administer such tests at every grade level, define success or failure of programs in terms of test scores, and even link teacher and administrator salaries and job security to student performance on standardized tests. (Pierangelo & Giuliani, 2017, pg 20). Standardized test drives instruction in education. Teachers use this as a way to monitor students success and progress throughout the year. We used standardized testing throughout the school year. The thing that is concerning is that using standardize testing as a once size fits all in education. However the test has biases. 2. Searching the internet: One website According to Understood.com, “Teachers and even parents may think kids are having trouble with reading because they’re struggling with a new language. A good indicator of dyslexia is if kids have trouble reading in their first language as well as the second language. But only a full evaluation will be able to show if a child is having a language learning problem or a reading problem” (Rosen, 2023). 3. My own one experience, or one observation, or one idea (pertinent to the topic) I work for Dallas Independent School district which is predominately Hispanic district. What I have seen is that a lot of students that are bilingual have been diagnosed with either having dyslexia or a specific learning disability. However, no one consider if the students have a language barrier. These students are being identified by using standardize testing scores and standardize testing scores are not bias to cultural or language differences. We also as a district teach to the test and utilize a lot of different standardized assessments to monitor and track growth. 4. Ideas or knowledge of one other person This school year I went from working with elementary age students to middle school age students. During my interview I discussed the data for the 6 th grade that school year, and my principal responded that bilingual students receive bilingual instruction in elementary, but there are no bilingual supports in middle school. All district test and diagnostic assessments are done in English. There is no bridge to assist the ELL population with support with the transformation. This also will lead into the students struggling, and not receiving passing grades on their standardize assessments. References
