Milestone Two
Social and cultural barriers can play a significant role in getting people connected with heath care services. In the case of my client, Mary, there are several barriers preventing her from using transportation services to get to and from appointments. Firstly, Mary lives with physical disabilities and uses a walker to get around, making navigating transportation services more challenging than it is for able bodied persons. Mary also lives with significant mental health needs. These mental health challenges may cause her to experience feelings of anxiety surrounding the inconsistency of the state funded NEMT. Finally, Mary has shared discontentment she felt with the government back in her “younger days”, sharing instances where she picketed outside of government offices. This past discontentment with the government
may indicate that Mary still has some feelings of discontentment or even distrust towards the government and the services they provide, potentially making her reluctant to use the transportation services. Outside of Mary’s situation in particular, social, and cultural factors that impact the use of transportation services present themselves to many people. These factors include internal or external biases or stigmas surrounding the use of transportation services, language barriers and cost. Additionally, while Mary is mobile and able to get around with her walker, this is not the case for everyone. Individuals may not be able to utilize transportation services due to ill-
equipped drivers or buses that lack the equipment and training necessary to accommodate those with physical disabilities that are in wheelchairs or motorized chairs. To make sure my presentation is appropriate to deliver to diverse audiences, it will be necessary to take social and cultural differences into account. Specifically, understanding the perspectives of both the transportation companies’ managers and bus drivers will be crucial. By understanding

their social and cultural backgrounds, we will be better equipped to foster a conversation of understanding and ultimately to ensure we are able to meet our shared goal of providing the best transportation services to the people who need them. In my presentation, I plan to use clear and concise language paired with visuals to make sure my presentation is easily understood and if applicable/ necessary, make sure my presentation is available in different languages.
