1) Using the Types of Listening and the Listening Styles found in the chapter identify and list a listening type and style for each of the medical workers and support your choices with examples from the clip and the concepts from the chapter. Dr. 1- Empathetic Listening: The doctor measuring Rocky's head is a people-oriented listener. This is because he responds to Rocky's humor and listens to Rocky actively throughout the scene. Dr. 2-Informational Listening: The woman doctor who speaks most through the scene is content-oriented based on how she's asking Rocky about her mother. Dr. 3- Informational Listening/ Informational Listening/ Critical Listening: The one who comes in and talks to the woman doctor is a time-oriented listener because he barges in, asks her about Rocky, and is always curious about what he needs to do, like how he offered to take the position from Rudinsky. His character, to me, makes him look like he wants to get to the point and asks what he wants to hear. He can also be action-oriented because he focuses on what needs to be done and how he is a new person based on how Rocky perceives the information he knows. Doc Rudinsky- Empathetic Listening: Doc is people-oriented because he asks how Rocky's feelings are and explains Rocky's healthy being in general. 2) Identify at least one way in which the process of perception influenced the behavior of two people in the clip. Please develop your responses by using concepts and examples from the information in the chapter and your own experience. 2) The process of perception influences Rocky's behavior and that of the doctor taking pictures of him. They relate to one another on the patterns they experience every time they visit the doctor. For example, Rocky already knows he has to take pictures after the measurements, and the doctor says" he knows the routine better than us." This can tie in with the interpretation aspect because Rocky will know what he will interpret at his check-ups, considering he often goes based on the routine. 3) Identify at least one individual who had trouble listening effectively in the clip. What were the barriers to effective listening and bad listening behaviors employed by this person? What could he/she have done to make the situation better? Support your points with specific examples from the clip and using the concepts from the chapter. 3) One of the individuals who had trouble listening was the new medical person who came in and asked the female doctor for information on Rocky. He had trouble listening between Rocky and Doc Rudinsky because he was trying to listen in the back, and once he heard the methods, he was concerned about it. The barrier that shows bad listening is based on poor judgment because he interrupts the conversation and wants to know right away. The other barrier to effective listening is
that he is actively listening to the conversations all around him. To make the situation better, the doctor could: 1. Practice Active Listening: The doctor could actively listen to Rocky by providing their full attention, maintaining eye contact, and using verbal and nonverbal cues to demonstrate understanding and empathy. 2. Allow Time for Questions: The doctor could create a supportive environment for Rocky to ask questions, express concerns, and seek clarification about Rocky's condition and treatment options instead of interrupting. 3. Show Empathy and Respect: The doctor could demonstrate empathy and respect towards Rockyby by acknowledging his experiences, validating him, and treating him with dignity and compassion, as the doctor made it seem as if Rocky wasn't there. By adopting these strategies, the doctor could facilitate effective communication and build trust with Rocky, ultimately improving the quality of care and support provided to Rocky.
