You have just finished a lesson on solving inequalities and handed students a worksheet to
complete silently. While the students were working independently, you decided to check
your email, not realizing that your computer screen was still being projected to the class.
You open an email from the principal Mrs. Russell, who is following up on a student
Rebecca Johnson, who was recently referred to receive services on an Individual Education
Program. You realized what had occurred once you heard the students giggling at the
screen. You quickly unplugged the computer from the projector and told the students to get
back to work. What should you do next to protect the student’s privacy? Include evidence
from the "Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE)” and “Professional Dispositions of
Learners.”
My next action should be aimed at protecting Rebecca Johnson’s privacy and should be
guided by the “Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE)” and “Professional Dispositions of
Learners.” MCEE states that teachers have a responsibility to maintain the privacy of their
students and not share confidential information with anyone except authorized personnel
(NASDTEC, 2023). In this situation, as an educator, I have violated Rebecca Johnson's privacy
by inadvertently projecting her confidential information to the entire class. To protect the
student's privacy, I should first apologize to Rebecca for the mistake. This apology should take
place in a private setting away from other students. I should also apologize to the class for the
inappropriate display of the student's confidential information. After this, I should take steps to
ensure that the same mistake does not happen in the future.
The MCEE further indicates that it is
the obligation of instructors to guarantee that their students' information is secure and not shared
with anyone without their permission (NASDTEC, 2023). Accordingly, I should guarantee that
all confidential information is kept safe and not shared with anyone outside of authorized
personnel. This comprises warranting that all electronic devices used to access or store
confidential information are suitably protected.
The Professional Dispositions of Learners on the other hand states that educators should
strive to create a safe and secure environment for their students (Grand Canyon University, n.d.).
This includes providing a secure physical environment as well as a safe setting where students
are free from any risk of having their private information exposed. Abiding by these guidelines, I
should take steps to guarantee that confidential information is kept secure. This includes
correctly securing all electronic devices used to access or store confidential information.
Lastly, I
should take steps to avert any further embarrassment to Rebecca. I can achieve this by not
discussing the occurrence with any other students or staff members as well as by guaranteeing
that she does not feel singled out in any way. Furthermore, I should ensure that other students do
not spread any rumors regarding the occurrence or about Rebecca.
