2 1. Children reap the rewards of parent involvement. Decades of research show the positive effects on achievement when children\'s families are involved in their education. The video models how to conduct a family/teacher conference. Think about the value of family/teacher conferences to both the parents and the child. Why should a teacher be intentional in their planning for a conference with a family? How will you prepare for a conference with your families? Family-teacher conference, also known as parent-teacher conference, is an opportunity that enables one to share their academic progress and growth-based classroom observations, assessments, testing data, assignments and portfolios (Jordan et al , 1988). A parent-teacher conference is a great opportunity to be able to share the academic growth and progress based on observations in the classroom (Walker & Legg, 2018). They can also learn from guardians or parents so they can be better informed about the needs, strengths, behaviors and also the learning styles of students. They are also able to discuss enrichment and intervention strategies that would support the learning of students. A teacher needs to be intentional about family-teacher conferences not only to be able to plan for the child, but also to ensure that they have a stronger relationship with their families (Walker & Legg, 2018). By creating a connection between parents and teachers, there is the creation of a shared responsibility to be able to work in unison and to support actively the overall learning of students as well as their healthy development. To prepare for these meetings, the teacher should create strategies to be used on the conference, the length of time that the conference will take and when they are planning to communicate to the parents next. They can also provide some suggestions for the strategies
3 and activities that will support learning at home. Finally, they should spend few minutes before the end of the meeting to state the specific goals they have for the student. 2. One of the most important roles that a teacher has is to work with families toward a partnership with a common goal of nurturing and educating young children. In the video the teacher shares ways that she tries to work with families while building a strong partnership. How would you take the information shared and utilize it in your own work with children and families? I can take some crucial points to be able to use them in handling families and children. For instance, I would as well put in place the parent communication notebook, and also have the same version for the children. This way, I would be able to get some more information from both parents and students, especially information that they might not have been comfortable sharing prior or any that they might have forgotten to share. I would also put in place the parents’ board to be able to pass any valuable information to the parents and students. This can as well be in various language, like in the video, to aid in consideration of diversity. The parent newsletter can also be a good idea, to inform the parents on what the students have covered on a regular basis, as well as any challenges that might have been faced. This will also help the parent figure out how they could help the children at home.
