Case Study 2
GENE 402 – Making of a Christian Leader
Dr. Mahan
10/25/23
Introduction
When it comes to growing a church, I think it is important to take into consideration that
people are people, and God is God. A leader can do all the right things to let people grow, but if
God has not been brought into the partnership, it will ultimately fail because it will not be for the
right reason. Partnering with God on this matter should be one of the first things that take place
when wanting to grow. As a church leader who is led by God, a certain type of vision is set
within the pastor. God will lead and direct the pastor in a way that fits the community and culture
that surrounds the church, while also taking them to new places that will benefit everyone
involved.
Issue #1
Getting people to volunteer can be either one of the hardest or the easiest things for a
pastor to do. When it comes to getting people involved, it is important to hook them in with the
right reason, and I could argue that it is equally as important to show them the reason why
volunteering is right: urgency and vision. Urgency can easily be one of the reasons that the
Church pushes for more volunteers.
1
When there are fewer volunteers, people can begin to get
burnt out and their motivation begins to diminish. However, when the church becomes
transparent and shows that there is a real need for volunteers, their hearts will begin to move for
the church.
Additionally, vision can be just as beneficial.
2
If a church is given a short-term vision, the
members might be hesitant to join because they don’t know where they are going after the next
month or two. When there is a vision laid out, the church members know exactly what they are

signing up for, and what they are staying for. When people realize that the church has plans for
more than just the next month, they will also begin to contribute more to the cause. When there is
no vision, it is not likely that they will feel it in their heart to give to the church. Personally, I
have experienced this in the previous church where my parents worked. When a new pastor came
in, there was no vision set by him and his family, and this led to a huge decline in the
congregation’s attendance, giving, and participation throughout of church. A lack of leadership
when it comes to vision can be detrimental in every setting.
Issue #2
Getting and maintaining active volunteers can easily be one of the hardest things to do at
a church or one of the easiest, and I do not believe there is a middle ground. When it comes to
leadership in the church, I believe that modeling the way is and can be the best way to show the
congregation that volunteering is beneficial to building God’s Kingdom here on earth. When the
pastors teach their members how Jesus led primarily through helping those who needed it the
most and deserved it the least, people will begin to see the value it has for His Kingdom and for
their hearts and minds. Through Kouzes and Posner, we learn that when people learn the “why”,
the actual doing becomes much easier, and they learn this by watching the leadership take over
and do it themselves.
3
When people are able to “practice what they preach,” their words become
much more impactful, and they begin to speak to everyone much louder.
Additionally, I believe that not having a multitude of volunteers might not start out as a
problem, but it can easily become that way very quickly. Because of life, people’s schedules will
conflict at some point resulting in a time where not everyone can volunteer. This is when having
a plethora of volunteers can be very helpful. In order to gain a lot of volunteers, it is important to

follow at least the first two steps in this eight-step process to gain volunteers. Those two steps are
that we should stop to pray and confront and communicate a sense of urgency.
4
This will allow
the leadership to take a calm approach to fix this. Panicking can be one of the easiest things to do
and one of the worst things to do as well. When pastors create a sense of urgency within the
congregation, the people begin to feel a pull toward where there is a hole, and, if it is for the right
reason, the Holy Spirit will push them to serve where there is a need and where their talents
align.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I believe these are the best ways to build up a congregation and show that
they need to serve. When the church begins to grow and realize this, it will truly flourish under
God’s will. When the pastor begins to submit to the Will of God and change his approach to
ministry, the ministry will begin to grow for the glory of God.

The life cycle of a plastic bottle
After reading the text below, answer the following questions. Make sure to put it in your own words.
This is the story of three plastic bottles, empty and discarded. Their journeys are about to diverge with outcomes that impact nothing less than the fate of the planet. But they weren't always this way. To understand where these bottles end up, we must first explore their origins. The heroes of our story were conceived in this oil refinery. The plastic in their bodies was formed by chemically bonding oil and gas molecules together to make monomers. In turn, these monomers were bonded into long polymer chains to make plastic in the form of millions of pellets. Those were melted at manufacturing plants and reformed in molds to create the resilient material that makes up the triplets' bodies. Machines filled the bottles with sweet bubbly liquid and they were then wrapped, shipped, bought, opened, consumed and unceremoniously discarded. And now here they…

You can click the "unmarked" tab to see the molecule without any of the distances marked.
List all the distances that can change. For example, suppose all the distances were measured at a certain time, and again 0.1s later. If distance A might be 50%
bigger or smaller the second time, but all the other distances are certain to be the same, you should write "A". If A and B might be different the second time,
but no other distances, you would write "A, B". And so on.
Note for advanced students: you can assume the molecule is dissolved in an appropriate solvent at room temperature.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends us to limit "free sugar" intake to no more
than 5 % of the total daily Calories consumed. Sugars like sucrose are considered "free
sugars" and provide about 4 Calories per gram. If an individual consumes 2000 Calories in a
day, what is the maximum amount of sugar they are advised to take in? How does this amount
compare to the added sugars found in popular soft drinks?

One of the most common types of kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. In addition to calcium oxalate another product is also formed in the formation of kidney stones in the body. Certain foods are high in oxalate and lead to an increase of forming kidney stones in the human body. These high-risk foods are as follows:
Spinach
Swiss Chard
Almonds (nuts in general)
Sesame Seeds
Soy Products (such as soy-based milk, cheese, yogurt)
Sweet Potatoes
Okra
Beets
Chocolate
Black Tea
Another risk factor to developing kidney stones is not drinking enough water. Males have a higher chance than females of developing kidney stones, with the average age being 30. Oxalate in food binds to calcium during digestion in the stomach and intestines and then is excreted in the body as waste. If too much oxalate appears in the urine and not enough liquid (due to not drinking enough water), then calcium oxalate crystals form, which are the kidney stone.

remove graffiti from the bathrooms. She has to take a lot of breaks, because
the chemical makes her throat burn. It also makes her feel dizzy sometimes,
especially when the bathrooms don’t have very many windows. On the label, she
sees that the cleaner has methylene chloride in it. She feels like she’s
managing to get the work done, but she is worried about feeling dizzy. She
wants to find out more about this chemical, what harm it can cause, and
whether there are safer ways to do this work.

A discharge pipe releases small amounts of various alcohols from an industrial fermentation process into a lake. Local scientists would like to estimate the rate at which the alcohols are degrading in the lake. One of them, butanol (C4H9OH), is released to the lake at a rate of 20 kg/day. Butanol is measured in the lake water on several occasions at a concentration of 10-4 kg/m3; no butanol is detected in the inflowing stream. Average streamflow at the outlet of the lake is measured to be 3 x 104 m3/day. What is the magnitude of internal sinks of butanol? Assume there is not butanol exchange with the atmosphere.
