SCI 100 Module Six Activity: Science in the Real World Apply the scientific lens to a personal experience or event. Recently, my household has started to try to help out the environment in any way possible. We grow our own food supply in bulk and used recycled materials to do so, we try to carpool as much as possible, and follow the reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible while educating our children in the process. There are many detrimental effects on the environment from trash and waste, especially from plastic bottles. Plastic does not decompose, so every plastic item that has been made since its boom in the 1950s is still out there. Trying to burn it off emits dangerous fumes into the air that are bad for the atmosphere, so there is no way to really get rid of plastic. We have begun using plastic bottles to make mini greenhouses for starter plants, and slow watering systems for bigger ones. By carpooling, we try to put off less emissions into the environment by using fewer vehicles and we have a schedule with our neighbors on who takes the kids to school on what days. We have begun teaching our kids about the conservation of water and electricity and try to buy lights that are longer lasting. The video “The Other Inconvenient Truth” by Jonathon Foley, really opens one’s eyes to how much of an impact people have on the environment, whether it is done intentionally or not. Although we do not truly live off the land or on a homestead, we are trying to find a way to be almost self-sufficient and use the least amount of products that we can. Explain the value of being a scientifically informed citizen within your community.
I believe that it is very important for us as citizens and people to be as scientifically informed as possible about the world that we live in. To me, it is as important as profits are to a business. The more willing we are to learn about our environment, we can improve our methods of living. It’s important for us to understand what is going on around us, not just know it. The movie “The Earth is Full” exemplifies that if we never expanded by utilizing our intellects, we would still be a planet with humans compared to people on the planet. We are living with the damaging repercussions of the way we live and how many people there are on the planet. We are coming close to exhausting all of our resources, and when it comes to it, it will be catastrophic. Discuss the obligation of citizens to be scientifically literate and how that could affect global contemporary issues. Citizens have a responsibility to be more scientifically literate. For us to have a continued success as a species, and a livable planet, its extremely important for us to become more informed of our impact globally, and the contemporary challenges we face. By becoming scientifically informed and knowledgeable about our challenges and how to fix them, we could eventually alter the affects we’ve made and the course of events which can lead to a deterioration of many of these issues. As a species of intellect, we should learn more about our planet’s carrying capacity and what we can do to continue healthy sustainability. “The Earth is Full” movie depicts how humans are capable of incredible feats when faced with fear. We should learn what needs to be done for the survival of the human species, and what can be done in order to aid the replenishment of the environment while assisting ourselves in the process.
